HELPING TRANSFORM PRIMARY CARE

The NHS Black Country ICB is working with partners to transform primary care over the coming years — from GP practices and pharmacies to dental and eye care services. To shape this future, the Clinical Design Reference Group has been re‑established, bringing together clinicians, community voices and system partners to define what “good” primary care looks like.

ConGens is privileged to be part of this programme, sharing knowledge grounded in the lived experience of our members and will be the representative of our advisory group, feeding the views and experiences of our diverse communities directly into the Task and Finish Groups to help inform the CDRG’s work.

Using patient feedback and community insight, four priority areas for improvement have been identified – Frailty, Childhood Obesity, Demand‑intensive practice patients and Housebound patients with dementia. This initiative aims to explore practical changes that improve care for priority patient groups and ensure fair, effective access for everyone. Advisory groups have until the end March to obtain the views of their members and feed these back to the CDRG. It was great meeting ICB and advisory group members for the Frailty who will be pulling out the stops to get the first round of consultations underway.

Molineux stadium is a fantastic venue for hosting a range corporate and community events. It is here we plan to hold our heritage event in October whereby project participants will receive recognition awards for their service in the NHS, as well as the launch of our website and book. We had a great time meeting local organisations planning future events, which also afforded us the opportunity to forge valuable contacts. Guests were treated to a tour of the ground that included visiting the museum, corporate boxes and the players changing rooms. Special thanks to Maria for an amazing day.

We’re incredibly proud to share that we’ve received a generous £25,000 grant from the Postcode Community Trust, a grant-giving charity funded entirely by players of the People’s Postcode Lottery.
This funding will have a significant impact on our work in the community as well as make huge difference to our organisation. It will help us continue our health and wellbeing activity, provide developmental support to other organisations and enable us to meet operational costs and obligations.
“This grant is a lifeline. It allows us to focus on what we do best, which is serving our community with the confidence that our core operations are secure.” Said Ian Peddie, Project Coordinator.
We’re deeply grateful to the Postcode Community Trust for making this possible. Your support helps us build a stronger, more connected community every day.
The picture attached shows of one of our Dementia Awareness classes in session. Dementia is a growing problem with projections indicating almost one-in-two people will develop the disease. It is therefore important people make themselves aware of the condition, and take any necessary measures to mitigate its impact.

On Saturday 25 October, the Wolverhampton Heritage Centre came alive with heartfelt stories, community spirit, and a deep sense of gratitude as we hosted a special event to honour retired NHS staff and raise awareness of our ongoing heritage project.

We were privileged to welcome the Mayor of Wolverhampton, who officially opened the event. His presence was more than ceremonial—he took time to speak personally with guests, learning about their former roles and the invaluable contributions they made to public service. His genuine interest and warm engagement set the tone for a day of reflection and celebration.

Among the attendees were retired nurses, their families, community group representatives, and members of the public. Many of the nurses were interviewed, sharing powerful memories of dedication, resilience, and compassion during often trialsome times in the NHS.

The highlight of the day was a moving combination of recorded and live interviews with Sonia Peteres and Allyson Williams. Both women spoke candidly about the personal challenges they faced and the determination it took to pursue their individual ambitions. Their stories resonated deeply with everyone present, reminding us of the strength and courage that often goes unseen.

As the event drew to a close, each retired NHS staff member was presented with a heartfelt thank-you and a single rose—a simple but meaningful gesture to honour their years of service and sacrifice.

The purpose of the event was to further raise awareness of our heritage project and update guests on its progress. We’re proud to be building a space where stories of service, struggle, and triumph can be preserved and celebrated for generations to come.

Thank you to everyone who attended, participated, and supported this memorable day. Your presence made it truly special.

What a fab day out in a Windsor. It was great having a mixed group of deaf and hearing peole visiting this historic town. Despite rain days earlier we were blessed with mostly sunny spells. ConGens has strong links with many deaf people and aims to bridge the communication divide by organising trips and activities where deaf and hearing people can interact. Many of who came know sign language to varying degrees which enabled most to communicate without relying on the interpreters who were present. Windsor is a wonderful town with many places of interest for people of all ages including Windsor Castle and Legoland. Future trips include Chester, Southport and Devon.

Our Heritage Of Caring project is revealing many fascinating experiences of individuals from the Caribbean who worked for the NHS during its formulative years. Mrs Peters, pictured below on the right, who is from Jamaica came to the UK at the age of 18. Her family was able to sponsor her trip to England so she could immediately register as an SRN. Her story tells of challenges and accomplishments many would find inspirational. The first event to showcase the experiences of participants will be later this year in October. We look forward to sharing the stories of all involved.

Special thanks to volunteers past and present supporting our work in the community to help people become digitally literate. Using a computer, tablet or smartphone is important for accessing information or performing everyday tasks. We provide support to people in a variety of settings including community centres, supported living schemes or at home. The support we offer is tailored to meet individual need. Great to see our volunteer Matt helping an older learner keen to improve their digital skills.
