Get out and get active
Cadet life is about learning through practical experience, especially in the great outdoors! Here's a taster of what's in store:

Camping - Work on your survival skills and learn your strengths in a team. Easter/summer camps - As you advance in rank you can take part in these popular camps held at RAF stations around the UK. Overseas camps - Spend 10 days in Cyprus with fant

astic weather, swimming, sailing, and maybe even see the Red Arrows practise their displays (they train there). Head to Germany where you'll visit a city or cemetery from the First and Second World Wars. You may even get to fly in helicopters - another exciting possibility for cadets. We have two centres, at Windermere in the Lake District and Llanbedr in coastal Wales, both with stunning scenery. Rock climbing, abseiling, high-level hill walking, mountain-biking, canoeing, high rope work and sailing are all par for the course. Get airborne

Flying is central to our purpose and your cadet experience. You'll have loads of opportunities to take to the skies:

Gliding - Soar to success! There are fantastic opportunities to glide while you are a cadet, with the ultimate goal being a solo flight. Training is in three stages: a Gliding Induction Course (GIC), Gliding Scholarship (GS) and Advanced Gliding Training (AGT). Air Experience Flights - Feel the thrill of powered flight, with a fully qualified pilot to guide you through taking control of the aircraft yourself. Not only have the opportunity to learn about the flying controls but you’ll experience aerobatics and low level flying too. Air Cadet Pilot Scheme - The pinnacle of flying as a cadet, for advanced handling. Complete this successfully and you'll be awarded your cadet pilot wings. And if you do exceptionally well you could be recommended for further training which will help towards your Private Pilot's Licence! Air Cadet Pilot Navigation Training Scheme - A great opportunity to use your navigation skills, this two-week course where you fly for up to eight hours is open to selected cadets. Success will lead to you gaining your 'wings'.

Tonight we were delighted to promote one of our cadets to Cadet Sergeant and five cadets to Cadet Corporal.

Congratulations to SGT Jeyanthrin on promotion to Cadet Sergeant, and to CPL J. Carpenter, Cartwright, Lowery, Sephton and Banga on their promotion to Cadet Corporal.

Each of these promotions has been thoroughly earned. Over the past few weeks they have worked their way through a demanding promotion process, demonstrating their leadership abilities, drill and uniform standards, and completing a formal interview. They impressed the staff team at every stage with their commitment, professionalism and enthusiasm.

These promotions mark the beginning of an exciting new chapter. We have every confidence they will continue to develop as young leaders, set the standard for others to follow, and make a real difference within the squadron.

Congratulations once again – we are incredibly proud of you all! πŸ‘βœˆοΈ

A huge congratulations to two of our cadets who represented Staffordshire Wing at the Wales & West Regional Athletics Competition held at RAF Cosford after qualifying by winning their events at the Staffordshire Wing Athletics Competition earlier this year.

πŸ₯ˆ Cadet Cartwright put in a fantastic performance to claim 2nd place in the U16 Boys Shot Put.

πŸ₯‡πŸ₯ˆ Cadet Sephton had an outstanding day, taking 1st place in the U16 Girls Shot Put and 2nd place in the Javelin.

Both cadets should be incredibly proud of their achievements. They represented both the squadron and Staffordshire Wing with distinction, and we're delighted to see their hard work rewarded. Congratulations to you both! πŸ‘πŸ’™

This week we said goodbye to Cpl Robinson as he leaves the squadron to pursue the next stage of his education.

During his time with 1290 Squadron, he truly made the most of everything the Air Cadets had to offer, throwing himself into opportunities and enjoying every moment along the way. His commitment, enthusiasm, and positive attitude have made him a valued member of the squadron, and he'll be missed by both staff and fellow cadets.

We'd like to thank him for everything he's contributed to the squadron and wish him every success for the future. Good luck, Cpl Robinson!

1290 Does DofE! πŸ₯Ύβ›Ί

Day 1 of our Bronze DofE assessed expedition has gone well!

After a small navigation challenge this morning, the team worked together to overcome it and made good progress for the remainder of the day. It was great to see their resilience and teamwork in action.

This evening was rounded off with pasta, chicken and pesto, followed by everyone's favourite campfire treat – s'mores! πŸ˜‹πŸ”₯

Spirits are high, and everyone is looking forward to Day 2. Good luck to the team as they complete the final leg of their expedition!

πŸ§—β€β™‚οΈ This weekend, two cadets from 1290 (Wednesfield) Squadron joined others from accross sector 3 for an introduction to outdoor rock climbing at the beautiful Roaches in the Peak District.

Building confidence, learning new skills and even getting some abseils in!

This activity was provided completely free through the RAF Air Cadets with many trying outdoor climbing for the first time, all of the cadets did brilliantly!

All this, delivered by qualified volunteer instructors who gained their climbing qualifications through RAFAC.

Interested in volunteering? Adult volunteers can gain nationally recognised qualifications in activities such as climbing, mountain walking, paddlesports and much more, all while helping young people experience opportunities like this.

🌞 Bronze DofE Training Day – Cannock Chase πŸ₯ΎπŸ§

Seven of our cadets were out on Cannock Chase today for a training day in preparation for their Bronze Duke of Edinburgh's Award expedition later this month.

Accompanied by our OC, Plt Off Morris, and CI Morris, the cadets developed their navigation skills, practised emergency procedures, and worked on the teamwork and communication needed for a successful expedition.

With the current hot weather, we moved the training to an early start 0730 and finished by 1300 to ensure everyone stayed safe and comfortable while still getting plenty of valuable training in.

There was lots of learning throughout the day, plenty of laughs, and all of the cadets thoroughly enjoyed themselves.

We can also confirm they were definitely not bribed into completing the walk with the promise of an ice cream at the finish... πŸ¦πŸ˜‰

Good luck to all of our Bronze DofE participants as they prepare for their expedition later this month!
