Get out and get active
Cadet life is about learning through practical experience, especially in the great outdoors! Here's a taster of what's in store:

Camping - Work on your survival skills and learn your strengths in a team. Easter/summer camps - As you advance in rank you can take part in these popular camps held at RAF stations around the UK. Overseas camps - Spend 10 days in Cyprus with fant

astic weather, swimming, sailing, and maybe even see the Red Arrows practise their displays (they train there). Head to Germany where you'll visit a city or cemetery from the First and Second World Wars. You may even get to fly in helicopters - another exciting possibility for cadets. We have two centres, at Windermere in the Lake District and Llanbedr in coastal Wales, both with stunning scenery. Rock climbing, abseiling, high-level hill walking, mountain-biking, canoeing, high rope work and sailing are all par for the course. Get airborne

Flying is central to our purpose and your cadet experience. You'll have loads of opportunities to take to the skies:

Gliding - Soar to success! There are fantastic opportunities to glide while you are a cadet, with the ultimate goal being a solo flight. Training is in three stages: a Gliding Induction Course (GIC), Gliding Scholarship (GS) and Advanced Gliding Training (AGT). Air Experience Flights - Feel the thrill of powered flight, with a fully qualified pilot to guide you through taking control of the aircraft yourself. Not only have the opportunity to learn about the flying controls but you’ll experience aerobatics and low level flying too. Air Cadet Pilot Scheme - The pinnacle of flying as a cadet, for advanced handling. Complete this successfully and you'll be awarded your cadet pilot wings. And if you do exceptionally well you could be recommended for further training which will help towards your Private Pilot's Licence! Air Cadet Pilot Navigation Training Scheme - A great opportunity to use your navigation skills, this two-week course where you fly for up to eight hours is open to selected cadets. Success will lead to you gaining your 'wings'.

What a fantastic day at the Wing Athletics Competition for the squadron!

We’re incredibly proud to have come away with 9 top 3 finishes across a range of events — a brilliant achievement and a real reflection of the hard work, determination, and teamwork shown by everyone involved.

A huge well done to all of the cadets who competed today. Whether you were on the track, taking part in field events, or cheering on team mates from the sidelines, your effort, attitude, and support for one another were outstanding throughout the day.

Those cadets who achieved top 3 places are now likely to be selected to represent the Wing at the upcoming Regional Athletics Competition — an excellent opportunity and a testament to the standard they performed at today.

Days like today show exactly what squadron spirit is all about, and we couldn’t be prouder of every single cadet who represented the squadron.

Well done all! 👏🏅💙

Calling all former cadets!

We’d love to invite you back to the squadron for an evening.

If you were once a cadet at 1290 — or any squadron — we’d be delighted to welcome you to 1290 to share your experiences with the next generation of cadets.

We want to show our current cadets how being part of the RAF Air Cadets helped shape your journey and benefitted your career — whether you joined the Armed Forces or chose a completely different path.

The event will take place towards the end of the summer, with more details to follow.

If you’re interested in attending, please email [email protected] with your details and the years you were a cadet.

We hope to see many familiar faces back at the squadron!

Today we’ve been out at Morrisons Willenhall raising funds to support the purchase of new drones for the squadron, as well as recruiting new cadets and adult volunteers.

It was a fantastic day engaging with the local community, talking about what we do, and showing how much our cadets get out of being part of the RAF Air Cadets—from adventure training and fieldcraft to aviation and leadership opportunities.

We’re always looking for more adult volunteers (CFAVs) to get involved. Whether you’ve got a background in aviation, enjoy outdoor activities, or just want to help develop young people, there’s a role for you—and full training is provided. It’s a hugely rewarding way to give something back to your community.

A big thank you to the staff at Morrisons for their support and hospitality throughout the day, as well as our Civilian Committee and, of course, our brilliant cadets who represented the squadron so well.
If you’re interested in joining as a cadet or volunteering as an adult, feel free to get in touch!

Tonight we recognise and celebrate the end of an exceptional chapter for CWO Dos Santos as he concludes his time as the Lord-Lieutenant’s Cadet.

Being selected for this prestigious role is a significant honour, reflecting not only dedication and professionalism, but also the highest standards of conduct and commitment within the RAF Air Cadets. Over the past year, CWO Dos Santos has represented the organisation at a wide range of high-profile events, supporting the Lord-Lieutenant in their duties as His Majesty’s representative.

From attending civic ceremonies and formal parades, to meeting distinguished guests and members of the community, he has acted as an ambassador for both the Royal Air Force Air Cadets and the wider cadet movement. His role would have included assisting at events such as Remembrance services, awards ceremonies, and official visits—each time demonstrating confidence, maturity, and pride in uniform.

CWO Dos Santos has carried out these duties with distinction, setting an outstanding example to other cadets and leaving a lasting impression on all those he has represented.

Thank you for your service in this role, and for the standard you have set. We wish you every success in what comes next—you’ve certainly done yourself, and the squadron, proud.

Even though we currently don’t have access to our building, our cadets are still keeping incredibly busy!

This weekend two cadets from 1290 (Wednesfield) Squadron proudly represented the Wing at the Regional Athletics Competition in Ludlow, showing great determination and teamwork.

At the same time, nine of our cadets took part in the Chase Walk – an incredible 64km endurance challenge. While not everyone completed the full distance, taking on a challenge of this scale is a huge achievement and we are extremely proud of every cadet who took part.

Not having a building certainly isn’t stopping us from reaching for the stars and delivering the cadet experience. The dedication, resilience, and enthusiasm shown by our cadets continues to make the squadron proud.
Well done to everyone involved! 👏⭐

Fantastic effort this afternoon from the 10 cadets from who completed their third and final training session ahead of The Chase Walk in a couple of weeks.

The team covered an impressive 24km today in challenging conditions — but smashed it nonetheless!

The upcoming Chase Walk will see cadet teams take on a gruelling 64km endurance event over 15 hours.

It’s not just a test of physical resilience, but of grit, determination, teamwork and true esprit de corps.

We’re incredibly proud of the effort and commitment shown so far.

Well done, team — nearly there! 💪
