💚 Care continues after the emergency.

When a serious incident happens, we focus on helping people stay safe and treating physical injuries. But someone who was injured, witnessed what happened or stepped in to help may also need support afterwards.

This World Mental Health Day, the theme is “Lived experiences heard: real voices, real change.”

At citizenAID, we encourage everyone to make time to listen:

💬 Check in with someone after a difficult experience.
👂 Listen without judgement.
🤝 Ask what would help—rather than assuming.
💚 Keep in touch after the first conversation.

You don’t need to have all the answers. Giving someone time and space to be heard can be a meaningful first step.

Today, reach out to someone privately and ask: “How are you doing—and would you like to talk?”

Much has been said recently about enhancing national resilience. Here is an opportunity for you to take positive action. By asking your MP to support the forthcoming "Emergency and Life Saving Skills (Schools) Bill" you can influence both your local community and the country’s resilience to any serious injury from accident, natural disaster or deliberate attack (such as knife injury). This represents a modest amendment to the Education Act 2002.

When there is severe bleeding from any cause, minutes cost lives—indeed, blood loss can kill in under 5 minutes if not effectively treated, which is before any realistic emergency service response can be at the patient’s side. The only people who can make a real difference in this situation is you, the public. This is well recognised as “the care gap”, but we can fill this gap with education and empowerment, which starts in schools.

This Bill has its second reading on 16 October. If you also believe it is important that life skills to stop severe bleeding should be first taught at school, please help this Bill to succeed by contacting your MP and asking for their support: and please repost to your network.
