Cosford Air Cadets 2497 (Cosford) Squadron ATC ✈️

2497 (Cosford) Squadron was formed on 1st June 1971. However, when a new Air Training Corps Squadron is established, it is initially formed as a Detached Flight (DF) to a neighbouring squadron. It remains a Detached Flight until their number of enrolled cadets increases and is maintained. Once this is achieved, the status of Squadron is granted. Initially, 2497 (Cosford) Squadron formed as a Detached Flight of 1130 (Wrekin) Squadron. In 1971, 1130 (Wrekin) DF became 2497 (Cosford) Squadron, under the command of Flight Lieutenant Pybus. Since its formation, the squadron has had many homes at RAF Cosford, as well as having had numerous Commanding Officers over the years.

For , I’ve loved seeing people share what the Cadet Forces have meant to them. Naturally, it’s made me reflect on my own journey with the Royal Air Force Air Cadets.

I joined Cosford Squadron at 13 because a friend asked if I wanted to come along. Little did I know how much that one decision would shape my life.

As a cadet, I worked my way up to Cadet Warrant Officer, developing confidence, leadership, teamwork and public-speaking skills. I also discovered a passion for communications and helping raise the profile of my squadron - something that influenced what I went on to study at Telford College.

When I turned 20, I decided to stay involved as a registered trustee - a mix of trustee and volunteer responsibilities. I expected it to be a short-term commitment, but I soon found myself helping the squadron adapt to online training during the pandemic.

At the same time, I was elected Treasurer, a role I held for three and a half years. After eight years as a squadron trustee, I stepped down in 2025, having discovered just how rewarding it could be to help make things happen behind the scenes.

That journey eventually led me to become Chair of Trustees for West Mercian Wing in 2025 and a trustee of Wales & West Region.

My career has also continued to centre on children and young people, from youth programmes and training professionals to my current work supporting families navigating SEND mediation.

The Air Cadets helped shape the person I became, gave me skills I still use today and showed me the impact that adults can have on young people’s lives.

Now I get to play a part in helping provide those opportunities for others.

I often think about how different things might have been if my friend hadn’t asked me to come along that day.

Sometimes, one invitation really can change the direction of your life.

Recently, we said goodbye to one of our Cadet Flight Sergeants as they progress with their future career in medicine.

Whilst in the Royal Air Force Air Cadets, he achieved gold road marching 🥾(4x40km in Nijmegen), silver first aid 🩹 and the Method of Instruction qualification which he used towards teaching younger peers.

Good luck in the future, Cadet Flight Sergeant, and thank you for everything you did for the squadron! ✨
