Solid and sensible words, from someone who had and still has Wednesfield at heart.
As the MP you made sure that the village received funding when it looked to be going elsewhere. I know it's upset you to see the money seemingly going to waste.
If elected, one of the first things I will do is to call for the council's spending to be investigated.
Thank you for your support 🙏
Let's see a big push back against Labour's dominant but limp grip on Wolverhampton, next month.
Lots of people have asked me my thoughts about the local elections on 7th May. Well, I think this will be a fascinating set of results! This is a slightly long and rambling post, so maybe tune out now or get a cup of tea 🤣
As I'm not a politician at the moment, I get to speak as a proud Black Country Wulfrunian and with my telly commentator hat on!
Nationally, Labour support is expected to plummet, even predicting losses in large parts of London. They are hemorrhaging support to Reform on the right and the Greens to the left. Wolverhampton has a third of councillors up for election, and Walsall have all-out elections.
We have a chance to send a clear message to Labour about their shambolic leadership at national and local level. We will get a good idea of 2027 Wolverhampton results from these elections, as we see what happens in wards that have been strongly Labour. If, as predicted, their vote goes towards the Greens and Reform, we may see some very unusual results!
So, what would I like to see? I will always put country and local interest above Party, and the maths of Wolverhampton Council means it is almost impossible to oust Labour this time, BUT there is the chance to take a lot of seats, and for Conservatives and Reform to work together as a robust opposition, with a view to taking control of the Council away from Labour in 12 months' time.
I hope those two parties take as many seats as possible away from Labour, who have run the Council for so long. Local Conservatives and Reform share a huge amount of common ground, and I believe that mix of experience and fresh thinking would be in Wolverhampton's best interest. In some wards, splitting the right-leaning vote risks Labour winning - this happened in the general election. Ultimately, maths matters.
Experience also matters - understanding the workings of the Council takes time, how to get issues sorted in your ward, and how to scrutinise those big decisions about planning, SEND provision, budget etc. So I'd like to see a couple of former Conservative councillors returned to fight for their areas - Adam Collinge in Oxley and Andy Randle in Wednesfield. I also want to see Reform's Cllr Anita Stanley returned in Bilston.
If you live in a ward with good, experienced local Conservative Councillors, I'd vote to keep them. Focusing on the Wolves NE parliamentary boundaries, there are excellent Conservative councillors in Bushbury North, Short Heath and Willenhall North. If you live in a ward where Labour always wins, voting Reform is the best way to get Labour out.
That's what I think would be in our local interest, but I'm genuinely interested to hear your thoughts!
