Today, our thoughts and prayers are with the family and loved ones of Henry Nowak.

This case has put an uncomfortable spotlight on UK Sikhs and the right to carry the Kirpan and we acknowledge the misinformation and assumptions being made and politicized about the Khalsa identity and way of life.

However, as mothers and sisters, at the heart of this case is yet another family losing their child to knife crime.

No words can ease the pain of losing a child, nor can any sentence truly repair the devastation left behind by such a senseless act of violence. Henry was a young man with his whole life ahead of him, and his loss is deeply tragic.

As a community, we stand with Henry’s family in their grief and extend our heartfelt condolences. May they find strength, comfort and peace in the days ahead.

Rest in peace, Henry.

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT

It has come to our attention that there is an image of a woman currently being shared on social media by individuals attempting to identify the victim survivor in the recent Walsall r**e case. We want to confirm the image being circulated is NOT the victim.

****To be clear, the woman at the centre of this case is entitled to lifelong anonymity under UK law.****

Under the Sexual Offences (Amendment) Act 1992, it is a ***criminal offence to publish or share any information that could lead to the identification of a victim of r**e or serious sexual offences, whether directly or indirectly.****

This includes photographs, names, family details, locations, workplaces, social media speculation, or any information that encourages others to identify her.

Sharing false images, speculation and public commentary causes significant harm not only to the survivor herself, but also to innocent women and families wrongly drawn into public scrutiny.

Survivors of sexual violence should not have to endure public investigation, gossip or online harassment after already surviving profound trauma. The victim in this case has shown immense courage and resilience in seeking justice. She now deserves privacy, dignity and the space to recover and rebuild her life.

We strongly urge everyone to immediately stop sharing any images, names or identifying details linked to this case. Delete posts, challenge misinformation and report harmful content where you see it.

Respect her anonymity.
Respect the law.
Respect her right to heal.

Sikh Women’s Aid Welcomes Landmark Life Sentence in Racially Aggravated R**e Case

Sikh Women’s Aid welcomes the life sentence handed to John Ashby following his guilty plea for the racially aggravated r**e of a Sikh woman in Walsall. This is a landmark sentencing in a case that caused fear, outrage and deep distress across the community in West Midlands, especially South Asian women and girls living in the region.

Ashby subjected the survivor to a horrific racially aggravated r**e that left a lasting impact not only on the victim survivor, but on an entire community of women of color, who saw their sense of safety and freedom impacted in her experience.

Sukhvinder Kaur said “At the centre of this case is an exceptionally brave survivor whose strength, dignity and resilience have been extraordinary. She has fought relentlessly for justice while enduring the trauma of the criminal justice process and the weight of public attention surrounding this case. Her courage has been remarkable.”

“She now wishes to return to her life, to recover, to rebuild and to move forward after this ordeal. Sikh Women’s Aid asks that her privacy and anonymity are respected fully so she can do so with dignity, safety and peace.”
