As the weather begins to turn chillier, there is a chance a lot of us will be looking for ways to keep warm whilst keeping costs down. Before reaching for the electric blankets, make sure that it's safe to use and working properly by getting it checked for .

Free electric blanket testing and advice on energy bills and benefits is available to residents at three special information days in the city.
The events, organised by our Trading Standards team, will take place on:

• Wednesday, 30 September at Wolverhampton Market, Cleveland Street, WV1 3HH, 9.30am-4pm
• Thursday, 1 October at Wednesfield Library, Well Lane, WV11 1XT, 10am-4pm
• Friday, 2 October at Bilston Indoor Market, WV14 0DN, 9.30am-4pm.

Councillor Qaiser Azeem, cabinet member for resident services, said: “Over the past two years, we have run successful ‘Get Ready for Winter’ events and this autumn our Trading Standards team will again be out in the community to offer free electric blanket safety testing and practical advice to residents.

“These checks are particularly important as we head into the colder months, as electric blankets can deteriorate with age and develop faults that may lead to injury or even cause a fire. I’d like to encourage everyone, particularly older residents, to make use of this free service.”

Please note: It is important that all leads, controls and plugs associated with the electric blankets are brought along for testing. If the blanket fails and the owner is a Wolverhampton resident, a replacement will be offered for free. Funding for the blankets has been provided through UK charity Electrical Safety First.

📢 Join us for the SELSE HCC Sickle Cell Patient & Staff Education Day 2026!

Taking place online on Wednesday 23 September, 10am–4pm, the day will bring together patients, carers, families and healthcare professionals to share experiences, learn from one another and strengthen connections across the sickle cell community.

We’re pleased that our Sickle Cell Society Mentoring Team will also be presenting on the day, sharing more about our work supporting children and young people living with sickle cell.

The programme includes sessions covering children and young people, interactive discussions for all ages, and adult-focused topics around care, experiences and wellbeing.

Sickle cell disease is the fastest growing genetic condition in the UK with approximately 300 babies born with the condition each year.

The APPG & Sickle Cell Society has opened a call for evidence as part of its inquiry into sickle cell and thalassaemia service improvement — and we want to hear from you.

Submissions are welcome from people living with sickle cell disorder or thalassaemia, family members and carers, healthcare professionals, researchers, health system leaders, healthcare bodies and relevant organisations.

The care you get in A&E. The wait for pain relief. The service that got it right. Written evidence from the community is what turns individual experiences into national recommendations.

We know that patients are experts in their condition and there are many resources available to support you as advocates in your own care for sickle cell and thalassaemia. NHS England would like to understand more about where you go to find out more information, how easy it is to find resources and what you would like to see improved.
