Today on the Ridges, we cleared bracken to begin creating a glade, with before-and-after photos documenting our progress. We also discovered several fungi, including what appears to be a red-belted bracket (Fomitopsis pinicola), also known as a red-belted conk or red-belted polypore.
Plus, the Rangers presented long-service awards to some of the volunteers who were there today—congratulations to them all!

Yesterday, we were working on the Ridges, clearing overgrown bracken from the paths alongside our usual litter-picking duties. Ticks are often found in bracken, so this work will hopefully help keep both people and dogs tick free.

We returned to Simon’s Wood today to continue the next phase of the Beach Project at Heath Pool. This stage involved filling the ground levels and backfilling with logs, soil, and gravel gathered from nearby. It was heavy work, so the volunteers were grateful to be joined by a team from Salesforce whose extra hands made a big difference. Still more to be done though!

We were working with the Rangers today to clear main pathways of overhanging trees. In addition, Sweet Chestnut trees were coppiced with protective fencing installed to keep deer away from nibbling new shoots. A litter picking session was also conducted to help maintain the site.👍

What a contrast on our two volunteer days this month…bright winter sunshine to accompany our efforts maintaining the heathland on the first Wednesday…a week later constant heavy rain when removing excessive Laurel over at Finchampstead Ridges…oh well spring is around the corner!
