Holt Copse Conservation Volunteers

Holt Copse Conservation Volunteers Welcome to the HCCV page. Why not join us and help preserve this wonderful local woodland.

Holt Copse is a small area of semi-natural ancient woodland situated to the north west of Wokingham. The Copse lies on the edge of Joel Park, an area of municipal parkland bordered by the Joel Park housing estate, the main Reading road and Holt Lane. Joel park and Holt Copse are a popular amenity for local residents and a valuable haven for flora and fauna in a predominately urban landscape. The C

opse is managed by the Holt Copse Conservation Volunteers (HCCV) under the auspices of Wokingham Town Council. The HCCV hold conservation work parties on alternate Saturday mornings throughout the autumn and winter months. All are welcome to join in and no experience is necessary as training and tools will be provided.

For the final Saturday work party of the 2025/26 season the volunteers turned their efforts towards some renovation of the historic double row of red oak trees in Joel Park known as Connaught Avenue. Brambles and scrub were removed and trees lightly pruned.
Big thanks are due to Steve and Rowan for providing the delicious home made cakes that kept us all going.

This morning we picked up an interesting project we started last year. The hedge we planted along the edge of the woods 7 years ago, has grown way faster than previous plantings, as it gets so much sunlight, so we decided to prune some of the hazel to promote nut production, leaving the trees in between to grow into standards / hedge trees.

A good mornings work clearing overgrown brambles from the base of these trees.

Holly, Connor, Bradley and Ritu from the Wokingham branch of The Newbury Building Society gave us a hand this morning coppicing one of the largest hazel trees we've ever tackled. A great job done by all!

It's a shame the weather has been so dull this week as the red oak trees in Joel Park have been at their autumnal best.

16 of us were out in the Copse today, planning for our upcoming season. Some of us walked around assessing what work needed to be done this year and others completed surveys of the condition of the various compartments within the Copse. This produced very useful information, even though the three teams' views differed.
