Thursday, so we were out watering trees again. Definitely needed by the trees as some are suffering in the dry and windy weather. Many thanks to our 3 volunteers fron Aegon today helping us to water the 3000ltrs of water to the trees.

If you see a tree near you that is newly planted or suffering, please give it a water.

The photo is of our 3 volunteers on the upper part of the cycleway.

It is Thursday, so we are watering trees again!

We were very grateful to the four volunteers from Persimmon Homes as several of our regulars were unable to come, including Richard, our recently appointed Deputy Chairman. Despite this, we left no tree unwatered (hopefully).

Despite a small amount of rain over the last few days, we were out watering again today. Our regulars were outnumbered by additional volunteers from both Aegon and Persimmon Homes as well as others.

All trees (hopefully) watered with 2 cans each. A day when all our 25 watering cans came into full use.

I must check my spell check. A big thank you to our volunteers from Persimmon Homes. I seem to have just invented a new housing company, sorry!

We were out watering again today. Most of the trees were looking good, but on the upper section of cyclepath we noted 2 problems. Firstly the oak was full of caterpillars, probably from the brown moth. More worrying was that 2 of the liquidambers had had their footballs dug out, possibly by rabbits, but the soil had disappeared. We filled them in again and watered them well and hope they will survive.

It's been a dry April. Less than 3% off our usual rainfall, and that's not much here in the East of England. So we have started watering, last Thursday we watered 3000 lt of water on the trees we planted over the last 2 years. We will continue watering every week, probably, until September. A wet summer would be best for us and for the trees!

The picture is a tree to look out for, a Judas Tree (cercis siliquastrum). Noteworthy as a small tree with blossom that often appears on the trunk as well as the branches. This one from a front garden in The Avenue.

We have another morning off tomorrow (Thursday) as the watering season has not yet started. However, unless it is a lot wetter than expected, we are aiming to start watering next week 23rd of April (St. George's day coincidentally).

We are having a dry April (unlike "dry January ") and despite a wet winter, the surface is drying out.

Re photo, spot the tree. We have planted several of these. This is in The Avenue, but there are several on the cyclepath beyond Cut Throat Lane, going towards Rivenhall. These yellow edged versions are smaller and flower earlier than their usual variants.

They are the Variegated Tulip Tree (Liriodendron Tulipifera Aureomarginatum). I assume the name comes from the leaf shape.

It is Thursday so we used this opportunity to try and protect the remaining 5 Paulwonias next to the cemetery. We planted these at the end of the very dry summer, before the rain started. It was so dry in the planting holes that we watered the trees after planting. However the other consequence was that the posts were not knocked in as far as usual, and two sets had been removed with the trees.

So this morning we took the cages off, knocked the posts in quite a lot further then replaced the cages. We will wait and see if any more are removed.

Also today, the cherry trees at Templars play area are looking really good in flower.
