An elf being stolen, stones being thrown, lights being kicked and a grown man messing about with our sign board... These are just a few of the worst examples of what happens in the brief moments where we aren't outside keeping an eye on things...
I can't continue to run the display in its current form without more help. Would you consider volunteering to help us greet visitors or offer any other help with the display?
We'd like to build a team of local volunteers including meet and greeters - we would also appreciate anyone who could help with setting up - no specialist knowledge is required. For those with more specific skills such as electronics, carpentry, creative skills - we'd love to hear from you. Anyone with experience of wearing mascot/character costumes, or would like to gain some experience - we would really appreciate the help - it would be perfect for drama students looking to gain some real world experience.
The vast majority of visitors are wonderful, respectful, and hugely supportive. However, every year there are occasional incidents that remind us how important it is to have people around to greet visitors and keep an eye on things. More commonly, visitors just need a gentle reminder that they're visiting a private home and to treat the display with respect.
To give some perspective, I currently spend around five hours outside every day, in all weather conditions, for six weeks whilst the display is running. That's on top of the many weeks spent planning, building, installing, and later dismantling everything.
People sometimes ask why I put so much time, effort, and endure so much stress for something that benefits complete strangers. The answer is simple: the display brings joy to thousands of people and raises significant amounts for charity. In a world that can often feel difficult and divided - creating a little bit of magic for the community makes it worthwhile.
If you'd like to help keep that magic alive, and can spare any time at all, please get in touch. If you know someone who may be able to help please tag or share. Every bit of help makes a difference.
Thank you for your support.
