Reading Old Boys Lodge was formed in October 1911 as a lodge for pupils, former pupils and teachers at Reading School. It continues to attract former pupils of the school although its membership is much more diverse and multi-cultural.

Since the 1980s the lodge became open and started to take any one who wanted to be a member of a lodge which meets on a Saturday. We now have equal numbers of non-school and school-connected members.

Until the 1990s the lodge met at Reading School but successive head teachers made it increasingly difficult to do so. The move to Sindlesham Masonic Centre meant that all meetings now take place on Saturdays. We start at 4pm to ensure that we are on our way home by about 7.30pm

The lodge crest shows Henry VII who refounded the school in 1485 as well as (to the right) the former crest of Reading Council.
The three scallop shells on the left are a reference to Reading Abbey, the school being originally founded by Henry I at the same time as the Abbey in 1125.

The Latin numbers at the top of the jewel refer to the number of the master of the lodge (82nd). The two blues and white in the ribbon relate to the school colours and the Latin words around Henry VII “ars mecede viget” are the School motto and translated as “work brings rewards”.

Over the last 110 years Members of the lodge have taken an active part in freemasonry both in Berkshire and nationally.

The lodge maintains a friendly rivalry with Aldworth Lodge, the rivalry with Reading Bluecoat School on the sports field having existed for over 300 years.

Reading Old Boys Lodge fosters a spirit of fun and enjoyment at its meetings.
