🌿 Here are a few more photos from our recent pond restoration project 💚

What an incredible community achievement!

Over three days, a dedicated team of volunteers transformed Lady Owen's Pond, removing more than 225 tonnes of silt, restoring habitats for wildlife, and building a new water-retaining dam to help protect the pond for years to come.

There are so many people to thank, particularly our core team of Robin, John, Paul, Alex and Scott, along with the 14 additional volunteers who worked tirelessly to make this project a success.

Special thanks go to John Medhurst, who not only expertly operated the digger throughout the project but also generously covered the hire costs. We'd also like to thank the fantastic team at Travis Perkins for their support and everyone who bought tickets for the Windlesham Picnic Raffle. Together, these contributions helped cover the majority of the costs of this significant conservation project. For a small charity like WFoR, that is huge!

This is community spirit at its very best.

Pond restoration is now underway! Volunteers Scott and John have been busy and the plan for the works is as follows:

• Monday 17th August: Prepare the site, move equipment, and clear vegetation.
• Tuesday 18th August: Main volunteer day! Dredging, excavation, and sandbag filling for the new pond wall.
• Wednesday 19th August: Finish remaining works, reshape banks, and complete site improvements.

If you have some time tomorrow to come and help us - even just an hour - we would love to see you. Meet from 9am onwards in the Hub car park.

Its going to be another hot one so remember to bring food, water and a sun hat and wear sturdy footwear.

Useful tools, such as spades, shovels, clippers/lopers and handsaws could also come in handy.

If you want to know more, or let us know that you are coming, please contact Scott ([email protected]) or Catherine ([email protected])

🔥 EXTREME WILDFIRE RISK IN SURREY 🔥
Our Windlesham Field Of Remembrance is the heart of Windlesham - a shared green space we all treasure. With the current extreme wildfire risk, we need everyone’s help to keep it safe and fire free.

We already have a no fires and no BBQs policy on the Field, but we know summer visitors may not be aware. Please help spread the word - We’ve also put signs up to help remind people.

Surrey Fire and Rescue Service advice:

🚫 Swap BBQs for picnics
• No Disposable BBQs
• No Open fires
• No Camping stoves on Surrey’s heathlands, grasslands and village greens.

🚭 Smoking & litter
• Dispose of ci******es and smoking materials safely
• Take ALL litter home or use bins

🔥 If you see a fire:
• Report it immediately - don’t assume someone else has
• Call 999 and ask for Fire Service
• Share as much detail as you can
• Never try to tackle it yourself - move to a safe distance

Let’s protect our village greenspace and keep Windlesham safe this summer. 🌿💚

💧 A Note About Watering the Cricket Square 🏏
We've had a few questions from residents after seeing the cricket square being watered, so we wanted to explain why.
With Affinity Water introducing a Temporary Use Ban (hosepipe ban) for our area from 17 July, we're committed to using water responsibly, just like everyone else.
The cricket square is watered only when necessary to maintain a safe and playable surface, and we keep water use to the absolute minimum required. A healthy square provides consistent bounce and helps reduce the risk of an unsafe playing surface for players.
This activity is permitted under the current exemption rules. We appreciate everyone's efforts to conserve water during this prolonged dry spell and will continue to monitor the situation carefully to remain in compliance.
Thank you for your understanding and for your continued support of village cricket. 💚🏏
