What a fun night that was!!

Members of the Royal Wi******er Golf Club raised laughter and over £1,200 for local charity, Wi******er Bereavement Support, at its ‘Has RWGC Got Talent’ night as part of its fundraising efforts for this year’s Captains’ Charity.

Compère, Patrick Bevan, introduced the nine amateur acts to great hilarity and applause from an audience appreciative of his golfing gags. The band, Pitch Marks and Divots, opened the show followed by well-known local raconteur, Bob Sprague, who delighted everyone with his stories of Spike Milligan.

Wi******er Bereavement’s ‘Charity Belles’ joined in the fun with quick fire sketches of Cinderella and The Sound of Music to roars of laughter.

Sandra Gordon read her moving poetry about grief and childhood memories, and John Cole sang a stirring song from Les Miserable.

The evening was rounded off with club Captain, John Quinn’s own story of a baby left in a moving car to the ‘oohs’ and ‘ahs’ of the audience.

Tee Times, a script written by John and played by club members Ness Ashford & Paddy Mawhinney, had more golf gags for the audience to enjoy leading to the finale and the hilarious antics of the Capt’s Committee Choir.

Dressed as characters from ‘Old MacDonald’ they were mooing, quacking, neighing, baaing, oinking, clucking and singing with great gusto to the chorus refrain of “E I E I O” from the audience.

John Quinn said “It was a great fun night raising funds for this small but important local charity.
The capacity audience clearly enjoyed the evening, and my thanks go all to all the participants who gave their time to the event. The money raised is just part of our fundraising efforts this year and helps WBS in its ongoing work and training of Bereavement Visitors and Clinical Supervisors. These are the volunteers who make a real difference to people’s lives at a time of great sadness.”

Nikki Flannigan from WBS said “We are immensely grateful to everyone at Royal Wi******er Golf Club for putting on this fabulous event and for raising significant funds for our charity. We are so fortunate to be the Captains’ Charity of choice this year, which will enable us to make a difference to even more people’s lives.”

WBS is a free, confidential, one-to-one home visit or telephone service for anyone aged 18 or over finding the loss of a loved one difficult to bear. It serves a 10 mile radius across Wi******er including Romsey, Chandlers Ford, Sutton Scotney, Alresford and Bishops Waltham.

We are currently seeking a new Chairperson for our small friendly charity.

Do you have experience in leadership and a passion for supporting the bereaved?

We are seeking a new Chair to guide our dedicated committee and trained Bereavement Visitors, ensuring we continue to support our community and those navigating loss.

What the role involves:
● Leading 5 committee meetings a year plus an AGM.
● Acting as an ambassador for the charity.
● Working with the team to set our strategy and direction.
What we are looking for:
● A compassionate approach.
● Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
● Previous experience in leadership or committee work (preferred but not essential).

This is a voluntary role, but a hugely rewarding opportunity to make a tangible difference.

One of our volunteer Bereavement Visitors received a wonderful letter recently from a former client:

"Thank you for helping me understand what I am feeling, and teaching me how to deal with that, and for showing me there are ways to navigate loss that are positive. Thank you for caring about my whole life and not just me, and walking me through the process with love and gentleness - you reminded me to by myself"

We are so happy to make a difference.

Does a particular view or a sunny day remind you of a happy moment with a loved one who's no longer here?

Today, on Mother's Day, we are remembering the mothers who are no longer with us, and thinking of those mothers who today are without their child.

“There is no death, daughter. People only die when we forget them," my mother explained shortly before she left me. ‘If you can remember me, I will be with you always.’” — Isabel Allende, "Eva Luna"

To finish the year, we’d like to say a huge thank you to Charlton Park Crematorium, for their wonderful recent donation to WBS. It will enable us to reach many more people in 2026.

Wishing everyone a very happy New Year

Today marks the end of Grief Awareness Week. Again we would remind anyone who is struggling at this time of year with the absence of a loved one, that it is OK to reach out for help. There are many resources available, including of course our trained bereavement visitors.

It costs £5.00 per visit for us to visit those who are in need of support. This includes continual training to ensure that our team are fully aware of how to support people. Many people are unaware that we are entirely volunteer led and rely entirely on donations to run. WE hope to reach even more people in need during 2026.
