If you need someone to help you dispose of your waste, please protect yourself by checking that anyone who gets in touch to offer to help you is registered as a legitimate waste carrier. Remember to ask for a receipt too.

Keep Britain Tidy reports that “around 38% of fly-tipping incidents are linked to unlicensed ‘rogue traders’ who lure residents with cheap rubbish removal deals on social media and then dump waste illegally in our communities. If you pay someone to take your waste away and they fly-tip it, you could still be held responsible and issued with a fixed penalty notice. So what may seem like a bargain is actually a .”

1️⃣ Gather your unwanted cables - dig out those tangled wires, mystery leads and old chargers you no longer need.

2️⃣ Sort them - check what works, what you still need and use our cable guide to help identify any mystery cables.

3️⃣ Bag them up - gather all your unwanted cables together ready for recycling.

4️⃣ Find your nearest recycling point - use the Recycle Your Electricals Recycling Locator to find your nearest drop-off point.

Yikes!

This is my 6th birthday party. It's 1987 and Care Bears were very much in vogue.

Nearly 40 years later, the tableware from that party is still sitting in a landfill somewhere.

The paper from the plates may be close to gone by now. The plastic coating is still there, along with the plastic cups and straws, and those cups could last another 400 years.

Even then they won't disappear. Plastic breaks into smaller and smaller pieces that stay in our soil and water.

That's why I help hundreds of people around the world run party kits of reusable tableware. Birthdays and other milestones deserve celebrating. They bring people joy and bring them together. A party shouldn't leave behind waste that outlives everyone who was there.

The National Garden Scheme has opened applications for its 2027 Community Garden Grants – generously supported by the Julia Rausing Trust.

“The National Garden Scheme welcomes applications from projects that bring together people from different backgrounds and experiences, and from those that support disabled people or people living with long-term physical or mental health conditions. With all applications considered on their individual merits, awards between £1,500 and £5,000 will be granted,” says National Garden Scheme Chief Executive, Dr Richard Claxton.
