Hampshire is a ‘high solar index’ area: it is sunnier for longer and more frequently than other UK areas. So we can generate solar energy easily and locally to replace fossil fuels.

Rooftop solar panels also decrease dependence on expensive electricity from the national grid.

Wi******er district has one of the highest numbers of buildings with solar panels (almost 3,000 rooftops) compared with its direct neighbours.

Research by RSPB (The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds) and Cambridge University in East Anglia revealed another benefit of solar farms: they can boost bird numbers and species, while increasing the variety of wildlife, compared to nearby arable farmland.

The RSPB’s Chief Executive Beccy Speight said that it is possible to balance "safeguarding nature, tackling climate change, ensuring food security and resilient farm businesses, and enabling sustainable development".

This research confirms that solar farms could help boost bird numbers and increase the variety of wildlife, helping the UK deliver on clean energy and for nature.

Behind the scenes, we are finalising the speakers and sessions for our Autumn conference, Accelerating Solar Developments on 20 October.

Most people understand why generating energy from solar farms matters for the climate.

What is less talked about is how we make sure it is built in the right places, in the right way, with local people genuinely involved.

We are still dealing with heatwaves this summer. The UK reached 40°C for the first time in 2022. Penny Endersby, the Met Office Chief warned that the "human-induced climate change" contributed to this.

One way to take action against climate change is generating renewable energy. We support Wi******er communities to do that through solar farms and solar panels. These provide energy that is clean and safe, both for nature and people.
