It’s Carers Week 2026 and this year’s theme is Building Carer Friendly Communities 🧡🥰

A carer friendly community is a place, space or organisation that values carers and does something practical to support them by identifying carers, listening and responding to their experiences so that they are not left to cope alone (Carers UK, 2026).

Our Dementia Support Service runs a weekly Memory Wellbeing Centre, providing a welcoming space where people living with dementia, carers, families and friends can come together.

The sessions provide opportunities to socialise, take part in activities, access advice, and build connections with others who understand the realities of living with dementia. Many people tell us that the friendships, encouragement and sense of belonging they find at the Centre are just as important as the professional support available.

Activities vary from week to week and may include guest speakers, games, table tennis, creative activities and opportunities to simply enjoy a chat over a cup of tea.

One carer who regularly attends our Memory Wellbeing Centre shared, “(The Memory Wellbeing Centre is) an absolute lifesaver and lifeline. I could not have managed my husband at home for as long as I did without their professional help, support, care and kindness.”

We’re proud to support a Carer Friendly Community, supporting carers to feel seen, valued and less alone while supporting someone with dementia. Carers UK

On Wednesday, we hosted a social event for our volunteers and trustees 🧡

Held in our community room, the event was an opportunity to recognise and thank everyone for their continued support, share updates about the what’s going on within the charity, and bring people together to meet, connect and share experiences.

It was lovely to see so many of our volunteers there, including several of our trustees, some of whom are new to St John’s.

Thank you to all our volunteers for everything you do for St John’s and the community we serve. We really appreciate your time, commitment and support and wouldn’t be able to achieve what we do, without you 🥰👏 ******erCommunity

Currently, one of our most successful weekly activities is our table tennis club! 🏓😀

The club was initiated by one of our residents, who wanted to share his love of table tennis with the rest of our almshouse community. The club started with a couple of members and has since grown, with a number of our residents now attending weekly.

The club is supported by several of our volunteers, whose encouragement, enthusiasm and involvement help make the sessions interactive and really enjoyable. As well as supporting residents, our volunteers often join in the games which helps to create an inclusive and fun atmosphere for everyone.

Thank you to all our wonderful volunteers who give their time to support activities like this and help bring our community together 🧡 ******erCommunity

Volunteers’ Week is back! 🎉 It’s that time of year when we celebrate all things volunteering.

Here are a few recent comments from some of our current volunteers:
✨ “I've met some truly inspirational people, and I've discovered some skills that I didn't know I had!”
✨ “It’s fun, it’s rewarding; you feel valued, supported and appreciated…love it!”
✨ "I enjoy volunteering with St John's because I get to be part of a friendly community while gaining confidence with communication and teamwork."

We’re so pleased that our volunteers not only help our work but also get a lot out of it themselves.

Please join us in thanking all the volunteers, including Trustees, who support our charity and the communities we work to serve 🧡

Next week, we’ll be supporting the Alzheimer's Society ‘Forget Me Not’ Appeal and with a range of events designed to raise awareness, support those affected by dementia, and help build more dementia-friendly communities through inclusive activities across Wi******er 🧡

On Monday 18 May, our Dementia Support Service will be hosting a glass workshop at our Memory Wellbeing Centre for people living with dementia and their carers. This session will offer members a chance to try something new and creative in a safe and supportive environment.

Then, on Wednesday 20 May, our Dementia Support Walking Group will enjoy a leisurely walk around historic Wi******er. The walk is open to anyone who is living with dementia, provided they attend with a carer, and it is not limited to our current service users.

A key highlight of the week is the Virtual Dementia Bus, which will be at Wi******er Guildhall on Wednesday 20 May. Through immersive virtual reality technology, visitors will gain a powerful insight into the experiences and everyday challenges of living with dementia.

Throughout the week, there will also be a range of other activities taking place across the city, including information events and activities, wellbeing sessions, and support groups.

For more information about our events, please give us a call on 01962 858 282, otherwise, keep an eye on our socials for more information later this week. To find out more about the wider programme of events, call 01962 736 681 to speak to the team at Home Instead Central Hampshire. ******erCommunity
