WaterHarvest

WaterHarvest 💧For almost 40 years we’ve harvested rainwater to support remote communities, originally in India now Ghana & Uganda💧

Since 1987 we've worked with local partners to provide last mile communities with clean water - originally in India and now also in Ghana & Uganda. Our work improves health, reduces poverty and frees girls & women from water procurement to attend school and gain income security. To date we’ve worked in over 2,000 villages helping 2.3 million people.

Smiles were plentiful at the recent opening event for Tacpuli’s newly expanded dugout! We are proud to have funded our local partner Saha Global to expand and rehabilitate Tacpuli’s dugout in the North-East Gonja District of Ghana, which has been drying out for several months each year due to climate change.

Hopefully the renovated dugout at Tacpuli will:

💧 ensure clean drinking water is available to residents all year round
🚶‍♀️ women & children will no longer have to walk long distances to source water when the dugout is dry
🙋‍♀️ children can stay in school & women can focus on other important activities to support their families

🙌 Works have started on the final tanks in our two year programme to bring much needed water to remote schools in Uganda. By the end of July, we will have built 107 eco-block rainwater roof harvesting tanks in 22 schools supporting over 10,000 pupils and staff!

These tanks generate a range of powerful outcomes far beyond clean water:

💥 Improved health: attendance rates have increased at schools with our tanks, due to reduced sickness levels through a reduction in water borne diseases.

💥 Education: without tanks pupils miss lessons to collect water and poor sanitation leads to girls dropping out of school. Schools with our tanks show a substantial increase in girls’ attendance and school enrolment.

💥 Hunger: our tanks are enabling many schools to provide pupil meals for the first time and for cabbages, maize & bananas to be grown in school gardens.

💥Climate action: water from our tanks is being used to grow tree seedlings to plant in school gardens and distributed to parents & communities to enhance village micro-climates.

💧 There are more schools in the Masaka region that are in need of clean water. We are excited to announce we will be launching a new rainwater roof harvesting programme supporting additional schools this Autumn.

🤩 Dugout success in Sinsina, Ghana! We are so happy to share the news that following our renovation works, the dugout in Sinsina which is usually dry this time of year, is full of water!

👉🏼 In remote regions of Ghana year round steams are rare & ground water is often inaccessible, so communities collect rainwater in dugouts but these are now drying out for several months at a time due to climate change. This means villagers, especially women & young girls have to walk very long distances to find often un-safe water, disrupting their education and work.

💧 We are helping to resolve this problem by working with our local partner Saha Global to expand & rehabilitate dugouts to ensure villagers have a sustainable source of clean drinking water.

💥 The renovation works at Sinsina took place over several months last year, resulting in a deeper dugout three times its original size. Vertiva grass and trees were also planted around the dugout to reduce evaporation during the dry season.

🩵 It is wonderful to see how clean drinking water is bringing joy to children in Sinsina during a time when they would usually be struggling with water access.

💧Happy World Water Day! 💧Can you guess how many hand-made eco-bricks it takes to build each of our rainwater harvesting tanks at schools in Uganda? Have a look at our new video to see how they are made!

We know from almost 40 years’ experience that access to clean water not only improves drinking water availability but it also has powerful impacts on health, education, sanitation, poverty, well-being and the environment.

📰 Delighted to share our latest Annual Review! During 2023/2024 we delivered four rainwater harvesting programmes in India, commenced a new programme in Uganda and a pilot programme in Ghana. Our work supports a number of beyond clean water, including education, poverty & health.

💧 We continue to work in remote areas, where climate change greatly affects the vulnerable communities who are still lacking access to a source of clean water close to their homes or schools.

🌍 Our programmes in and are growing – if you would like to support our work, please get in touch.
