Stay At School

Stay At School Stay At School works to improve the education of children in Nepal by supporting children, teachers, parents, schools and related organisations

Stay At School is a UK-based charity (reg. 1173685) that builds and supports boarding houses at schools in remote, marginalised communities in Nepal, enabling children to access and maintain the education that is key to their future and the development of their communities. Better education is vital to future economic success and prosperity. It is only through maintaining their learning that child

ren can achieve their fullest potential. In poor mountain areas of Nepal, one of the world’s least developed countries, wasted opportunity and subsistence living still afflicts more than three-quarters of children. Our approach is simple and effective. If children can spend less time walking and more time learning; if their engagement with schoolwork can be improved and they can access greater support from their teachers; if they have a safe place to sleep and are provided with regular meals; their ability to gain and use an education will afford them a brighter future. Stay At School...we work with communities in Nepal to create brighter futures through better education.

Back in April our Fellows and senior alumni came together for a meaningful day of learning, reflection and future planning.
✅ Child Safeguarding Workshop strengthened awareness of safety, rights, responsibilities and support systems, both online and offline.
🎓 Grade 12 Fellows gained valuable insights through an alumni sharing session ‘What Next After Plus Two?’, where senior Fellows shared their academic and career journeys.
📚 A career guidance session by Galijang Shampang, Head of Programmes at Campion College, helped students explore how to choose the right course and college based on their interests, goals and future aspirations.
The day provided a platform for learning, mentorship and connection as our Grade 12 Fellows prepared to complete their Fellowships journey in May.

Our current Stay At School intern Charlotte has spent time in Salleri, the Solukhumbu district capital, working with our Fellows delivering spoken and written English lessons. The opportunity to practise with a native English speaker helps students build confidence while developing valuable language skills for the future.

“In our village, it wasn’t common for girls to be educated, but my father never held that belief. I have two brothers and my parents never treated me differently from them. They supported me in everything and I can’t thank them enough for that. Many of my friends didn’t get the chance to study - some of them were married off early.”

“Becoming a Stay At School Fellow completely transformed my life. It not only reduced my financial burden but also gave me emotional strength and motivation.
The Fellowship made me feel that I am not alone in my journey and that someone believes in me and my dreams.
I want to be someone who can inspire other students from rural areas to believe in their potential.”

“As an engineering student I can see that the gender gap is particularly wide in the technical field, computer science and engineering. The percentage of women in all tech related careers has actually decreased over the last few years.”

From standout performer to future change-maker, Sabin is now pursuing his bachelor’s degree at the Kathmandu Institute of Engineering, turning his talent and determination into real-world impact.
As well as his motivation for personal success, he’s driven by a powerful goal - to contribute to Nepal’s development by solving real problems and improving lives.
“Being a Fellow has boosted my confidence, focus and connected me with mentors who have shaped how I see my future.”
We can’t wait to see what Sabin does next!

🇳🇵 Tsering Wongdi is just one of over 1,000 young people whose lives have been transformed through Stay At School.
Raised in Solukhumbu, the son of cattle herders, Wongdi grew up in a small dirt-floored hut high in the mountains - an environment where studying was far from an easy.
With the support of our Junbesi boarding house, he gained the stability and space to focus on his education.
After completing his secondary exams, Wongdi earned a Stay At School Fellowship, progressed to higher education and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in IT.
His journey is a powerful reminder of what becomes possible when young people are given the opportunity to stay in education and the support to succeed.

We are incredibly proud to announce that we have fulfilled our pledge to transform 1000 young lives in Nepal over the past five years! 💙
In fact, a total of 1,212 young people were resident in one of our six secondary school boarding houses or received one of our coveted Fellowships for post-secondary study.
None of this would have been possible without your generous support, so ‘thank you’ from us all at Stay At School 🙏
But our work has never been only about numbers. It’s about the direction and quality of change and the lasting impact that has on each young person, their family and their community. By that measure, we are confident that our impact has been both meaningful and far-reaching.
The statistics we share in our report tell part of the story, the confident, smiling faces tell the rest. Together, they reflect the heart of our mission - brighter futures through better education ✨

The Annual Picnic Day is always a favourite for our Stay At School Fellows.
After breakfast and a warm welcome for the incoming Fellows, intern Victoria gave a motivational speech to kick things off.
Everyone then set off on a hike in the Pattale region, taking in panoramic views of the Himalayan mountain ranges 🏔️
The day was filled with connection, joy and culture through:
🌿 Mindfulness sessions focused on sensory awareness
🤝 Team-building games
💃 Cultural dances - Sherpa, Sakela Rai and Tamang Selo - performed by a group of Fellows
🎶 Open dance sessions for all to enjoy
A memorable day centred on connection, culture and community 🇳🇵
