This week we hosted a wok cooking class, they made delicious chilli con carne served with dips, nachos and pitta bread, everyone also got to take home their own goodie bag of food

Thankyou to Itchen college for teaching this class.

Next week we are hosting our own class, dish yet to be decided, but likely chicken chow mein

5th June is World environment day so final post of the week on how Unit12 is doing their bit!

Books!
We have plenty of second hand books on site from cookery books, fiction, children’s story books

What can you do
📚 drop off your unwanted books - good condition only please
📕 come swop a book, don’t buy new!
📖 come sit in the cafe or garden and have a quiet read

World environment day

Do you know we have a community garden? This is run by a team of volunteers who keep it looking lovely. We grow fruit and veg that are used in the cafe and the pantry

This week we have dug up new potatoes 🥔 and potato salad will be on the cafe menu today.

How can you help

🌹 donate unwanted plants, flowers, vegetable (seeds or plants)
🌱 volunteer to help in the garden, an hour a week to water or mow is a huge help
🥔 come in to the cafe and cook with fresh produce which will be in abundance this week

We are proud to have Hilliers supporting our community garden this year with many plants

World environment day

What else does Unit12 do to help with sustainability ?

Clothing! Fast fashion has a detrimental impact on the planet so we have many clothing projects within the unit.

We have a cabin filled with clothing which we sell for just £1 an item. There are also several free clothes rails around the building for anyone to use and take from, no questions asked. We also have a prom dress loan system which has been in place for 3 years, helping those in community attend prom whilst helping our environment

What can you do to help

This week is World Environment Day, Unit12 does many things to help with the impact on the environment and will give a few insights each day this week into what we do and achieve to be sustainable.

Our community pantry picks up food waste every day from many local partners. Most of these items either have a BB date so are perfectly ok to consume the day after.

This collection of food stops huge wastage and helps feed local families

To date we have picked up approx 58 tonnes of food, which equates to 140,000 meals.

What can you do to help?

🚗 driver Volunteer - we always need collectors to help pickup waste food
🍌 pantry volunteer - help sort the food and give out to our members
💰 donate - it’s takes time and costs to co-ordinate the collections and keep the pantry running

Unit12 will next week be celebrating all things ‘biscuit’ for National Biscuit day.

What could you do?

Come into the community cafe and buy a delicious homemade 🍪

Volunteer for a few hours in the cafe to help bake your favourite biscuit.

Donate a packet of biscuits to the community pantry, it’s also half term so this would be great for local families
