Day 2 of the Gold DofE Qualifying Expedition: Mission Accomplished! ⛵️🌊

An epic 13+ hour passage in the books today! Our cadets took Boleh from Yarmouth all the way to the River Hamble via Calshot, casting off at 07:10 and tying up safely at 20:47.

Here are the highlights from today’s leg:
In Full Control: The cadets are completely skippering and sailing the vessel themselves, handling navigation and seamanship. Our two qualified adults on board are strictly supervising—only stepping in if safety requires it!

Spotted at Sea: The crew had an audience today!

They were spotted en route by one of our instructors from his Royal Navy vessel, as well as another instructor passing on his RIB who captured these amasing photos of Boleh under way. 📸

Huge effort from the entire crew pushing through a long, rewarding day on the water. On to Day 3 where they sail to Cowes and then onto Chichester Harbour! 💪⛵️

⛵ Day 1: Handing over the helm!

The Gold DofE Qualifying Expedition is officially underway! Today, the adults stepped back into supervisory roles, and the cadets took complete ownership of the boat. ⚓

With LC Will taking the helm as Skipper and an incredible cadet crew handling the deck, the team slipped lines from Gosport, navigated the Solent, and executed a brilliant passage to dock safely in Yarmouth, Isle of Wight this afternoon. 🌊

Top-tier teamwork, sharp navigation, and genuine leadership on display from hour one.
Bravo Zulu, crew! Bring on Day 2. 👏💪

⛵️ And we’re off! 🌊
After months of hard work, planning, and preparation, our unit-led Gold DofE Offshore Expedition is officially underway!

This expedition is planned, organised, and run entirely by our unit under a bareboat charter aboard the historic junk-rigged vessel, Boleh (owned by the Boleh Trust). Supported by a MSSC relief skipper and our own Unit Training Officer as Mate, our team is taking full charge of the adventure.

Today marks Day 2 of the practice expedition, with our cadets setting sail from Gosport to the Isle of Wight!

The crew brings together four cadets from Wi******er and one from Bournemouth. A huge shoutout to Leading Cadet Will, who holds his RYA Day Skipper and will be leading the Qualifying Expedition under adult supervision.

Every cadet on board has put in immense effot to earn various qualifications in advance. Toghether they hold a variety of Day Skipper, Competent Crew, VHF, and RYA Essential Navigation & Seamanship qualifications to get here

A massive thank you to The Ulysses Trust for providing the bursary support that helped make this life-changing, unit-run adventure possible! 👏✨
Stay tuned for more updates from the water! ⚓️👇

⚓️ WHAT A WEEK! ⚓️
It has been an absolute whirlwind of activity for Wi******er Sea Cadets over the last 7 days! From the water to the kitchen, our cadets have been throwing themselves into every opportunity.

Here’s a snapshot of what we’ve been up to:

⛺️ Unit Boating Weekend: We kicked things off last weekend by pitching tents at the unit and spending two action-packed days on the water mastering sailing, rowing, and kayaking!
⛵️ Tall Ships Race: Huge shoutout to LC Will, who joined TS Royalist for a massive 2-week passage! After setting sail from the Tower of London, he has officially made it to Amsterdam. Safe travels for the rest of the voyage, Will!
👑 VIP Visit: On Tuesday, we were delighted to welcome our new District Officer, LtCdr (SCC) Bassett RNR, to the unit for an official visit.
🧁 Behind the Scenes: On Thursday, we took a trip to the Royal Navy Catering School at Worthy Down. The best part? The cadets got to sample some incredible, freshly baked cakes! 🍰
🏆 Regatta Success: We wrapped up the week on Saturday at the Area Paddlesport Regatta. A massive Bravo Zulu (BZ) to our two competing cadets who brought home a stunning 5 medals (4x Gold 🥇 and 1x Bronze 🥉)!
