The Hampshire Regency Dancers - HRD

The Hampshire Regency Dancers - HRD The Hampshire Regency Dancers is a historical dance group based in Wi******er, England. Dances are taught with the help of experts in historical dance.

The Hampshire Regency Dancers is a dance group based in Wi******er, England. Our aim is to promote, practise and enjoy the dances from the late Georgian and Regency periods, circa 1775-1830; and to have fun while doing so. We meet to learn the Country Dances, Cotillions and Quadrilles danced by Jane Austen and her contemporaries. Jane lived most of her life in Hampshire and is buried in Wi******er

Cathedral. She wrote all of her novels in the village of Chawton where we regularly perform. We walk the figures through in advance, practise any new steps and then dance them to the music of the period. Some of the dances are lively, but others are slow and stately such as those you might have seen in film or television adaptations of her work. Regency dances are suitable for adults of all ages and abilities, and you don't need to bring a partner or a costume to join in.

Hampshire Regency Dancers joined the residents, guests and staff of Brendoncare Care Home in Otterbourne, Hampshire for a delightful afternoon tea event to celebrate the opening of their sensory garden. It was so nice to see so many staff, visitors and residents dressed for the occasion.

The HRD team, led by Kate Lobb, danced a number of Regency and earlier dances including Revolution de La France, Bloomsbury Market, the Duchess of Devonshire’s Reel and Mr Beveridge’s Maggot. A brief session of audience participation followed. The HRD team alternated performances with a string quartet. The afternoon concluded with a sumptuous Afternoon Tea.

We had a delightful time dancing for visitors to the Amesbury History Centre this weekend. HRD dancers performed a number of display dances over two sessions in the afternoon followed by audience participation dances. It’s a great opportunity to share our love of dancing and in this period of history with others and for them to try out Regency dancing for themselves.

Kate Lobb led the dance team and Adrian Lobb spoke about the life of ordinary soldiers during the battles of the Napoleonic War.

On Saturday 21st March Hampshire Regency Dancers held their annual Spring Assembly in Romsey.

As for last year, we provided a full programme of talks and learning opportunities such as button making and the creation of floral headdresses plus a chance to learn the Laendler dance. A range of stalls offering Regency clothing, hats and jewellery were available. A hairdresser and wig maker was present all afternoon and Ros Oswald brought her spinet and played a range of Regency period music.

An evening of Regency dancing followed led by a team of HRD callers.
