5 THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT CHRISTMAS 🎄
🤔 And how to stop panic buying and put people and planet first, not pointless packaging
We just read an eye opening new blog from Save the Children: in the UK the average household spends over £500 on Christmas gifts every year and many of those gifts, bought in the panic and pressure of the season, are never used 🤯
That jumper that’s worn once. The gadget that breaks by February. The candle nobody wanted. Cheap toys ending up in landfill. Wrapping paper enough to go around the earth three times over.
If we care about the climate, the planet and justice - especially for kids globally who already face hardship - we need to think differently this Christmas.
Here’s what we’re calling for this season
1️⃣Choose “pre-loved” gifts: from charity shops, secondhand stores or give items you already own that still have life in them. This reduces demand for new production and prevents needless waste.
2️⃣Opt for experiences or meaningful gestures instead of mass-produced “stuff” - time together, acts of kindness, shared meals, donating to a charity.
3️⃣Whenever you do give gifts pick high quality, sustainable, durable items over cheap disposable goods.
4️⃣Talk to family and friends about shifting away from over-consumption. Gift giving doesn’t have to mean buying more.
5️⃣If you’re in Wimborne or nearby, before you buy anything new, check our local charity shops (including those on our Wimborne Charity Shop Trail). You might find something preloved, meaningful and planet-friendly.
We’re part of a community, let’s use this Christmas to show that we value our planet and our children’s future more than impulsive shopping.
It's three days before Christmas. You're standing in a crowded shop, holding a scented candle you're not sure anyone wants, wondering if this is really what the season is supposed to feel like.
