Today with massive thanks to one of our biggest and longest supporters, Paul at , the team were able to repair and extend the path surface in Cannon Hill South.
Over the last decade or so we have tried to keep the paths here as accessible as possible.
This particular spot is especially popular with some of the less mobile in the community.
This is due to a combination of an interesting network of level paths, 10 benches to rest on and good access.
The raised surface path over the muddiest stretches extends the accessibility of the bridleway route to all but the wettest times.

Following a couple of requests the team completed some tasks to improve access and safety yesterday.πŸ’šπŸŒž
Jobs included -
Clearing brash and stumps along the desire paths within the crop trees above Bee bank to make it accessible again for those that enjoy a quiet space off the gravel tracks.

Some careful and minimal strimming along part of the path from the Cannon Hill Rd entrance.

Cutting back the vegetation by the car park on Uddens drive making it safer to exit and for those crossing on the Castleman Trailway.

In the same place, clearing the alternative horse "escape route" we created some years back in the event of inconsiderate parking blocking the normal route.
We have already received positive feedback on the work. πŸ‘ŒπŸΌπŸ™ŒπŸΌπŸ’š

Today the team were absolutely blown away by the support, both in person and online, following the damage that was caused to the mire viewing platform at the dogsplash.
Scott was so overwhelmed he even had to eat his lunch in the back of Glade Runner the tool and welfare trailer (or it may have been the brief rain shower 🀷).
Repairs were carried out to make it safe and in some cases barely noticeable.
The dead hedge barrier, a deterrent for people and dogs going further into the sensitive mire habitat was added to and the trackside ditch dug out again.

One of the biggest successes of the day was the initial stages of reinstating a long forgotten public footpath. This project was suggested by the local beat manager at Forestry England and the team really enjoyed getting stuck into it.

Finally on one of the grass rides, we began clearing around one of the mature oaks to get more light into it.

Want to be involved in the adventure? Now is as good a time as ever! We would love to see you. πŸ’šπŸ¦Ž

Fly tipping in progress at White Sheet??
No, not this time πŸ˜…
Shoveling up the ashes from last month's fire site and moving them to the woodland where the nutrients will feed the crop rather than putting it into the heath (which should be kept nutrient poor), did look a little dodgy.....🀣
The rest of the team looking a lot less suspicious, cut back along the paths and cut some small drainage channels to send the water that was accumulating on the path back into the mire.
Nesting birds are a real possibility now, so we are taking great care with what we do and where.πŸͺΊπŸ¦β€β¬›
We also put to the test our new pop up seating.
Just comfortable enough for a lunch break, but not too comfortable πŸ˜‰πŸ’šπŸ¦Ž
Where to next? We are thinking Cannon Hill South needs some attention πŸ‘ŒπŸΌ

Another cracking day with the team at White Sheet today.
This time opening up a path that was virtually impassible due to very leggy Gorse encroaching on it.
The main track was also cut back and a lovely sunny glade created getting the sun onto a bank that should be great for bees and invertebrates.
We were really lucky with the weather, having a mostly sunny day and the rain just starting as we were packing up. πŸ’šπŸ¦Ž

What a difference two weeks make! 🌧️🌞
Last time we were at Whitesheet it rained the whole time, yesterday it was a beautiful day to spend on the heath.
An epic effort from the team saw a huge area of heathland restored.
As it was probably our last opportunity until the Autumn for any significant heathland works, the race was on to clear, process and burn up everything we had cut.
With Scott on the chain saw and Paul and Francis on the clearing saw, supplementing the team on now saws, there was a massive amount to clear......πŸ˜…
To minimise damage to the heath and reduce the fire risk, the decision was made to burn on the hard standing some 200m from the work site.
Fortunately, thanks to Francis making a double trip to bring the water bowser and Glade runner to site we were also able to bring a large trailer to shuttle the brash to the fire.
Massive thanks to everyone who came along and those that stayed to get the last of it burnt up.
It was lovely to welcome Mandy and Nick for the first time too πŸ’š

Our Mother's day volunteer day special on Sunday 15th March, just needs a few details confirmed, but we hope to be back at Whitesheet clearing a very overgrown footpath... Watch this space!

MADNESS!!!
Did 16 volunteers really spend 78 hours in the rain on our new project at White sheet?
YES!!!
It was super lovely to welcome two new volunteers, Benita and John.
A huge area of heathland was cleared of Birch and Pine and transported to a hardstanding that we can burn on when we come back in two weeks time.
Thank you to all involved, the impact on this sensitive habitat is huge! πŸ’šπŸ¦Ž
If you missed out today, we will be back there on Saturday 28th Feb. This is a job that can accommodate a lot of people! There will be no shortage of biscuits and sausages πŸ˜‰

Our trusty welfare / tool trailer "Glade Runner" has served us well for well over 10 years.

She has been deployed at most of our volunteer task days over that time, often exposed to some challenging terrain and weather conditions.

Although still the envy of every conservation group that sees her, she is showing her age a little.
whibley.1 has done an awesome job today with some running repairs, but we would love to be able to give her a complete overhaul this year.

There are some great upgrades and modifications that we have in mind!

Are there any businesses out there that would like to sponsor "Glade Runner"?
In return, we would happily take part in publicity and of course have a mention on the trailer.

If this opportunity isn't for you, watch this space, we have some more projects in the pipeline that we would love some help with.

What a cracking start to 2026πŸ’šπŸŽ‰
14 volunteers, over 80 hours of work achieved, 2 bonfires and awesome progress on our heathland restoration project.
Lovely to welcome two new volunteers, Leah and Andy who had both been meaning to come along for some time. We are so glad they did! πŸ’š
Are you looking for a new challenge this year?
