A huge thank you to Jane R for organising such a fun morning at The Beeches Adventure Golf.

It was wonderful to see everyone enjoying themselves, providing friendly competition, and great company throughout the course.

The sunshine made the morning even more special — we really were lucky with the weather.

Fulshaw WI were delighted to welcome Luke-Matthew Iveson, winner of 2024’s The Great British Sewing Bee, to our June meeting.

Originally from Heald Green, Luke shared his fascinating journey into sewing, from first learning the craft at around 8 years old taught by his grandmother, to rediscovering his passion at college through creative stage costume work. We discovered this wasn't his first time attempting to take on the Sewing Bee challenge having been the potential stand in for the previous series.

A truly inspiring evening with great insight from a talented local man. Luke and his mum were also extremely generous with their time, chatting with members and answering questions after the talk, which was greatly appreciated by everyone. Thank you, Luke, for such an enjoyable and engaging evening.

A wonderful visit to the Banksy exhibition in Manchester today with our Art Appreciation group.

Thought-provoking, powerful and at times deeply hard-hitting, the exhibition was brilliantly curated and exceptionally well presented throughout. Set within a superb venue, it made for a truly memorable and inspiring experience.

Many thanks to Benita for organising such an excellent trip for us all.

We had an incredible speaker at our April meeting. Tessa Boase, author, investigative journalist and campaigner travelled all the way from Hastings to speak. In her talk entitled Fashion, Fury and Feathers she described the campaign in the early twentieth century to outlaw the trade in ‘murderous millinery’ that is the exorbitant use of feathers and sometimes whole birds, in the production of fashionable ladies’ hats. She talked about the lives of four woman who went on to found the RSPB. We also judged the entries for the Lou Gardiner Award. The theme this year was to design a new logo for Fulshaw WI. The well deserved winner was Wendy Morris

When a Great Read Becomes a Great Meal

Fulshaw Book Group recently read Sweet Mandarin, recommended by Morag. The book traces three generations of Chinese women, from rural China to Hong Kong and the UK, and sparked some great discussion. It was an incredible tale and especially thought provoking knowing that it was in fact a true story of resilience and strength of character.

Inspired by the story, we decided to bring it to life with a visit to the Sweet Mandarin restaurant in Manchester. We were warmly welcomed by Helen Tse (the author) and enjoyed a fantastic meal — generous and full of flavour. The welcome and service we received felt so genuine and Helen especially appreciated talking to us about the book and her family.

It was a lovely way to connect the book with real life, and made for a really enjoyable evening.

We’d definitely recommend other book groups try something similar — it adds a whole new dimension to the reading experience. But especially reading and visiting Sweet Mandarin.

With special thanks to Morag for the recommendation and Donna for her excellent organisation of the evening.

We had a lovely morning volunteering at Francis House Children’s Hospice, putting together chocolate eggs and chicks and even repairing some little chicks so they can be ready for sale.

Last year, over 33,000 chicks were sold – an incredible achievement and the hospice’s major fundraising event.

Fulshaw WI have proudly knitted chicks and donated chocolate eggs over the past few years, but it was especially fabulous to be able to give our time and volunteer in person this year. It was such a rewarding way to support this amazing charity.

A huge thank you to Ann T for organising such a super morning for us all.

We were delighted to welcome Professor Zara Hodgson, Director of the Dalton Nuclear Institute at the University of Manchester, to speak this evening.

Professor Hodgson gave a fascinating talk about her career in the nuclear industry, highlighting key milestones including leading nuclear fuel policy for Department for Energy Security and Net Zero. She explained the important role nuclear research plays in supporting the UK’s energy future. And her Nuclear 'Tapas' gave a varied selection of subjects from Dr Who to Sewage Systems!

As Director, she leads the University’s nuclear research strategy. What made the evening especially enjoyable was how clearly she explained complex topics and how willing she was to answer questions.

Our members really appreciated her warm and engaging style.

It was another very successful evening.

Book Club – This Month’s Meeting

This month’s Book Club was led by Ann, with seventeen members enjoying The Glass Maker by Tracy Chevalier, including the BBC Sounds presentation. It prompted a good, lively discussion and plenty of shared thoughts about the book.

The story also brought back memories of holidays in Venice, which added an extra layer to the conversation. We were pleased, as always, to meet at a local business who are consistently welcoming and happy to accommodate our group.

Another enjoyable and well-attended meeting — thank you to Ann and to everyone who came along. We’re looking forward to next month’s read 'You Are Here' - David Nicholls
