Today has celebrated the South Durham Poverty Trust Commission.

Community and Civic Commissioners have been meeting monthly and identified their priorities as Access to Healthcare (with emphasis on neurodiversity and refugees and asylum seekers); domestic abuse, and benefits and disabilities.

At today's event, they talked about what they have achieved so far and invited people attending to input discussion into what might come next.

💡 Creative methods within research are valuable in rural communities because they can break down barriers which traditional research often cannot reach. This allows people to contribute in ways that provide choice, power and agency.

Our latest article reflects on the Rural Durham Community Research Networks latest gathering where we were joined by Katy Milne from Northern Heartlands and Mary Robson from Durham University.

As a community with a vested interest in listening to rural communities, the gathering reminded us of the importance of finding ways to build relationships, include people’s stories in ways that work for them and ensuring that all communities are heard and valued within research and decision making.

It’s volunteer week, a time to celebrate our volunteers and thank them for giving us their time and support.

Did you know that the trustees on our Board of Trustees are all volunteers too? They give their time and support to ensure Age UK County Durham is always the ‘go to’ organisation for anyone aged 50+ living in the County, for advice, information and access to all our services and activities. David has just joined us and we look forward to working with him.

Tony, has just retired after being a trustee for 23 years! He came in to see us earlier this month with his wife to say goodbye to everyone - he will be missed at our meetings.

If you would be interested in joining our Board of Trustees, get in touch!

Every act of volunteering makes a difference!
