On Wednesday 10 June John and I were delighted to be invited to a reception for Linking Lives at Kings Church to represent our Council as they are one of our Grant Recipients - a worthy cause our Council is pleased to support. I was very pleased to be given some flowers from the event to take home. We are pictured with John Caroe, Chief Executive of the charity.

MESSAGE FROM COUNCIL CHAIR JOHN PRITCHETT BEM

Huge thanks to all those who helped at our MUSIC IN THE PARK event today or had a stall at Huggetts Lane especially Nicola and Kevin Williamson, Suzy Standen Payne, and Dave Miles We think all will agree a good time was had by all - the Music was once again brilliant so many thanks to all the musicians; to Angie and her staff of the British Queen for the B**r Tent, 1st Willingdon Scouts for the Hot Dog and Burger Stall, and the Seven Sisters Pub for the Dog Show. Many thanks also to Owen Scaffolding Contractors who every year kindly erect the stage for us, all the Charity Stall holders and the Fun Fair. Huge thanks to Lauren Tilbury our PCSO who was at the event all day, giving advice and showing our young residents her Police Car.
Many thanks also to those COUNCILLORS who helped - John Pritchett, Chair, Ian Nisbet (Compere for the day), Martin Cooper; Raffle: Sally Morris, Christine Payne, Frances Pritchett & Ruth Sheppard, as well as WiLLRA members Rena and Colin Wood. Colin once again looked after the Bouncy Castle & Cllr Ryan Weedon who helped with car parking.

Very many thanks to all those residents who supported our Willingdon and Jevington Parish Council Assembly Meeting last night.
An interesting talk was given by Andrew Turner, Head of Highways which was much appreciated and for answering all the questions put to him.
It was also good to have our PCSO Lauren Tilbury in attendance who was also willing to answer any questions.
Once again it was a pleasure to be able to present so many grant cheques to local worthy causes which we have done for many years now.
Attached photos of some of the cheque recipients (22 in all) - Trevor Weeks, Wildlife rescue and Ambulance Service, Jill Parker JPK (& Jevington Church) and Trevor Amey of St Mary the Virgin Parish Church.

Key points from the talks at WLLRA AGM held on15/04/2026
PCSO Lauren Tilbury provided an update and advised that Sussex Police were doing specific work in Seven Sisters Road after a few road related incidents. They are in discussion with East Sussex Highways to introduce traffic calming measures.
Veolia – Recycling : Fascinating talk and videos presented by two representatives. The company does most of the recycling for East Sussex and Brighton and Hove.
They have several plants in the area:
Newhaven- non recycling items – household waste – converts non recycling waste into energy for the national grid. Approximately 16000 mega watts a year which equates to enough energy to power 20000 to 25000 households a year . It also powers the facilities at Newhaven
Woodland – Whitesmith: garden and food waste : All garden waste and now food waste collected is used to create compost . The lower grade compost is given to farmers in the area to use on their farms. The better grade version is sold as peat free compost(Pro-Grow) and is available for purchase online or via household waste items sites. Glass goes to another company in Kent for recycling
Hollingdean materials recovery – Brighton- Household recycling - - this is broken down and used locally or sent to be processed into new raw materials
Hazard!! Residents are reminded to recycle batteries separately. Failure to do so results in fires at the plant which endangers the staff and facilities. There is a fire every month caused by batteries .
In addition, Veolia offers guided tours for groups and a Wonder Day activity where members of the public can book to see how the sites work: https://www.southdowns.veolia.co.uk/community.
