Keep Britain Tidy

Keep Britain Tidy Keep Britain Tidy is passionate about cleaner, greener places. We all want our country to be a clean, green and attractive place.

We aim to inspire and equip everyone in England to help improve the environment on their doorsteps. This aim is still as urgent to us as when we were formed in 1954, to lead the campaign for a country free of litter. We work with and provide advice to a wide range of partners including major landowners, private sector organisations, communities and government. Evidence shows that grime leads to cr

ime and that clean, safe streets promote healthy lifestyles and active communities1. It is clear that the two are closely linked. People tell us that the quality of their local environment is as important to them as big global issues. We believe that local action to make the places where we live and work more attractive plays its part in helping the wider world too. Our Big Tidy Up and Love Where You Live campaigns bring people together to clean up their community. We also inspire landowners and the public to cherish our streets and green spaces, through the exciting Eco-Schools programme and the widely respected awards for Blue Flag and Quality Coast Award beaches and Green Flag parks. Our work with communities also helps ensure that our rivers are cared for and remain a haven for wildlife. Through our RiverCare programme we support local communities to enable them to take an active role in improving their local riverside environments. Working in partnership with Anglian Water and the Environment Agency, RiverCare works in over 40 locations helping communities to reclaim our rivers. In 2009 Keep Britain Tidy was awarded the contract to run the Green Flag Award for parks with partners GreenSpace and BTCV. We work with councils and community groups to bring that bit of greenery in your road up to the highest standards. Our parks and open spaces are precious and we need them free from litter with beautiful bandstands and fantastic flowerbeds. We have more than 1,000 perfect parks and green spaces nationwide, but our vision is to have 15,000 parks in England and Wales up to the highest standards by 2020. Blue Flag and Quality Coast Award are key to achieving our vision for improving local environmental quality at the coast and driving up standards in beach management and safety. Quality Coast Award is set to grow 20% year on year, whilst Blue Flag continues to go from strength to strength as a symbol of quality throughout the world. Our environmental education work is reaching 4.5 million young people in over 12,000 Eco-Schools every single day. Half the schools in England are now actively participating in our environment education programme towards a sustainable future. We use our expertise to encourage schools to be more sustainable, while we enthuse the creativity of the nation’s pint-sized campaigners. There are wonderful tales to tell, from windmills to allotments, to local campaigns. Children are the driving force behind Eco-Schools; they own it and they make the decisions that will ensure a sustainable future for us all. Working closely with our young people, we are enabling them to take ownership of their future. 👗 It’s National Secondhand Wardrobe Day!

Every year, around 300,000 tonnes of used clothes end up in landfill or are incinerated in the UK. That’s clothes with plenty of life left in them. 👚

At Keep Britain Tidy, we believe we can all do our bit to help end waste and live more sustainably, and the choices we make about what we buy are a big part of this.

So before you buy something new, what if your next favourite outfit was already out there? 👀

🚨 Cracking down on waste crime

Illegal waste sites are blighting communities, damaging our environment and leaving taxpayers to foot the bill.

The Government has announced a major new crackdown on the criminal gangs behind waste crime, bringing together the Environment Agency, police, councils and Mayors to:
🔹 Shut down illegal waste sites
🔹 Seize the assets of waste criminals
🔹 Strengthen enforcement and increase fines
🔹 Use better intelligence and technology, including drones
🔹 Clean up some of the country’s worst illegal waste sites

We welcome this action to tackle waste crime at its source, hold criminals to account and protect the places we all call home.

It’s time to make waste crime harder, riskier and less profitable.

📸 When a photo captures community spirit.

For World Photography Day, we’re shining a light on this brilliant entry from our recent Volunteers in Every Day Action photography competition. 💚

It captures the spirit of our Litter Heroes. People coming together, taking action and making a difference in the places they live. 📷🌱

From birdsong in our parks to pollinators in our green spaces, our towns and cities are home to an incredible variety of wildlife. 🌿🦋

Robins are busy hunting for insects, while young Tawny Owls are beginning to explore beyond the nest. But it’s not just birds. Bees, butterflies, hedgehogs, frogs and countless other creatures are making the most of our green spaces too. 🐝🦔

A bin is only useful if your litter makes it inside. 🗑️

Leaving rubbish on top of a bin might seem harmless, but it can quickly blow away, attract more litter and make our streets look untidy.

If there’s a bin, use it. If it’s full, take it home.

Small actions make a big difference. Let’s keep Britain tidy. 💚
