Why does community research matter?

Wigan is a diverse and vibrant borough, but many communities here face big social and economic challenges. Since the COVID-19 pandemic and the cost-of-living crisis health, social and economic inequalities have worsened, especially for marginalised groups. To create real change, research needs to be carried out not just about communities but by communities themselves to ensure local needs and wants are heard and acted upon.

The voluntary, community, faith, and social enterprise (VCFSE) sector plays a key role in connecting people with services. The creation of a WBCF PIE research network, will enable the VCFSE sector and community members to be directly involved in research, giving the community a voice.

By training Community Researchers, we make sure local voices shape research, influence decisions, and help create fairer policies that impact their lives. So, why don't you become one?

New Research Opportunity!

A new North West VCFSE Commissioning Review Panel has been launched to help improve how the voluntary, community, faith and social enterprise (VCFSE) sector is commissioned and funded across the region.

The panel will review real-life experiences from VCFSE organisations, using this evidence to identify good practice, highlight challenges and develop practical recommendations for fairer, more effective and transparent commissioning.

The panel is now inviting VCFSE organisations across the North West to submit case studies about their experiences of commissioning, procurement or funding.

Submissions can include both positive experiences and areas where things could have been improved.

A community researcher is someone from the community who talks with people they know or are connected to, to find out what matters to them. They listen to people’s experiences, views, and ideas and help make sure these community voices are included in research.

By researching within their community, they help ensure that research is accessible, inclusive, and grounded in real experiences, and that findings genuinely reflect community voices and priorities.

As a Community Researcher, you can:

In 2026, just as the PIE Hub started, the National Institute for Health and Care Research helped fund a project focused on expanding local understanding of what research is and what it can look like when communities lead it themselves - alongside growing the PIE Hub itself.. The project created space for communities and the VCFSE sector across Wigan Borough to explore research in a way that felt meaningful, inclusive, and rooted in lived experience.

Rather than research being done to communities, this work centred on research being shaped with and by communities, helping to uncover local research priorities and build stronger foundations for community‑led research across the Borough.

Our researchers learned that research needs to be meaningful, inclusive, and accessible, strong relationships are essential, involving communities at every stage improves the quality of research and key concerns were raised around health and well-being, mental health, environment, children and young people, neuro-diversity, cost of living.

The Community Researchers working on this project put together a brilliant poster - defining research priorities in the Wigan Borough. We're pleased to share this report is now available for you, too!

We Are Survivors have teamed up with Movember to undertake a brand new research project, focusing on understanding social attitudes that can affect male victims/survivors of s*xual harms.

This survey is open to all UK adults (18+), regardless of s*x, gender, ethnicity, religion, class, etc. They want to hear from as many men, women, trans, non-binary people from as many different communities as possible!
