And for the second group of beginner woodworkers it’s a wrap! 3 full days of learning about the tools and two different joints before making their own tool box.
These sessions are so valuable for both work, education and home skills! Thanks to Wigan Borough Community First for your support!
The woodworking and DIY CPD courses will be on again after the summer holidays. We have 16 people on the waiting list for the DIY course 🤯

🎨 Creative Wellbeing Sessions – Now Open for Booking 🎨

Our next group of Creative Wellbeing Sessions is now live and available to book.

Join us every Wednesday for 4 weeks from 24th June for a relaxed and supportive programme exploring creativity, wellbeing, and self-expression through a variety of artistic activities.

The sessions will be led by Emily and include opportunities to experiment with different materials and techniques, meet new people, learn new skills, and enjoy some dedicated creative time for yourself.

💚 These sessions are funded by Gaddum, helping to keep them accessible to our community.

Our SEND creative after-school clubs are on until the end of the term (apart from Wed 17th June). All the booking links are on Ticket Tailor. We still have a few spaces left for new young people to come along and try the sessions. A lovely hour to get creative in a small group with a fab tutor 🙂

📅 June Timetables at Wigan Workshop CIO 📅

Here are our June timetables for Meyrick Street, including our general sessions and our Path to Purpose project.
🔨 Our second Path to Purpose Woodwork Course starts next week and is now fully booked.
🎨 Our very first Path to Purpose Art Skills Course also starts next week and is fully booked.
💬 Our Drawing & Talking Therapy sessions continue on Fridays as part of the Path to Purpose project.
🎨 Our SEND 11+ Creative After School Club also continues throughout June.
🌿 We also have our third Creative Wellbeing group starting towards the end of June. This is funded separately, and the booking link will be available soon.

Looking ahead to July and August, we should also have some one-off sewing and DIY sessions available to book onto. These will be partly funded.

🌊 STAY SAFE, STAY DRY: The Truth About Open Water 🌊

With the warmer weather here, it can be incredibly tempting to cool off in local canals, reservoirs, or rivers. But what looks like a refreshing dip can quickly turn into a dangerous situation.

As a school, the safety of our students is our absolute priority. We want all our pupils to enjoy the sun safely, which means understanding why open water swimming is so risky.

🚫 Why Open Water is Different from a Swimming Pool:
Cold Water Shock: Even on a blazing hot day, deep water in reservoirs and rivers stays ice-cold. Jumping in can cause your body to gasp uncontrollably, leading to panic and drowning in less than a minute.

Hidden Dangers: You can’t see what’s beneath the surface. Jagged rocks, broken glass, shopping trolleys, and tangled weeds can trap even the strongest swimmers.

Hidden Currents: Rivers and reservoirs often have powerful undercurrents (and hidden machinery in reservoirs) that can pull you under instantly.

Pollution & Water Quality: Canals and rivers can carry harmful bacteria and illnesses (like Weil's Disease) that can make you severely ill.

🛑 What to do if you get into trouble: Float to Live
If you ever find yourself unexpectedly in the water, fight your instinct to thrash around.

Lean back and extend your arms and legs.

Gently move your hands and feet to stay afloat.

Float until your breathing calms down, then call for help or swim to safety.

🎒 Parents & Carers: Please talk to your children about these dangers. Let’s make sure everyone stays safe this season. If you see someone in trouble in the water, call 999 immediately—do not jump in after them.
