New breast cancer symptom awareness campaign for Greater Manchester
Greater Manchester Cancer Alliance is launching a new breast cancer awareness campaign encouraging people to “look and feel” monthly ahead of Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October.
The campaign features women from the Greater Manchester area and encourages people to be vigilant and report any potential signs of breast cancer to their GP.
The launch will include advertising in the Manchester Evening News and on the In Your Area and Bolton News, Oldham Times and Bury Times websites as well as social media promotion and work to promote the messages with community groups.
The resources will then be used throughout the year and shared with other NHS partners. The campaign is the result of work with five focus groups and aims to particularly target to women just below breast cancer screening age (40-50) and those just above screening aged (71+) as well as to women from ethnic minorities.
Please do use one or all of the posters in any local spaces or social media tiles and text in newsletters, WhatsApp groups or on your social media channels now and particularly during October for Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
The materials can be accessed on the Alliance’s Cancer Campaign Resources Centre. If you are able to put up any posters in your area you can download a poster here to print out or please contact [email protected] with your address and we can post these out to you.
If you have any questions about the campaign or can help further, please contact [email protected].

Reducing inequality in Greater Manchester
Increasing equity, equality, and inclusion is at the heart of all our work. At the Greater Manchester Combined Authority meeting last week, the city region’s seven Equality Panels provided an update of their work over the last 12 months. The progress of our Faith, Belief and Interfaith Covenant was also shared, around 18 months after it was formally endorsed in March 2024. The Equality Panels are a key route to making sure that lived experience influences policy making and the Covenant is a commitment between GMCA and Faith and Belief communities to a set of principles guiding engagement and collaboration. Some of the key pieces of work shared include:
The LGBTQ+ Panel engaged in the development of the Police and Crime Plan and Hate Crime Plan, which included producing a Hate Crime Survey specific to LGBTQ+ communities. The Race Equality Panel supported the development and delivery of Greater Manchester’s Civic Leadership Programme with participants becoming panel members and panel members entering the programme to further develop their skills and confidence to take on leadership roles in society. The Women and Girls Equality Panel worked with Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) on the design of gender responsive and accessible rail stations, including considerations for women and girls’ safety in the surrounding areas of stations, encouraging working with landowners to increase visible CCTV.
You can find the reports in full on the GMCA website.

Think Well With Cancer – Talking Therapies for People Affected by Cancer
Healthcare professionals working with people affected by cancer can now refer patients into NHS Talking Therapies.
The service is free, confidential, and available to anyone registered with a GP in Manchester, Bolton, Salford, Trafford and Wigan.
We’ve worked with Greater Manchester Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust Talking Therapies Service to create a dedicated pathway which can help support people who have been affected by cancer.
It offers support and psychological therapies to people who may be experiencing psychological difficulties linked to their experience of cancer.
This includes support for people who have had a diagnosis themselves and for their close relatives and loved ones.
We are now welcoming both professional and self-referrals into the service! https://gmcancer.org.uk/programmes-of-work/personalised-care-2/psychological-support-and-mental-health/think-well-with-cancer/
