Embrace Wigan and Leigh

Embrace Wigan and Leigh We are a user led organisation, over 75% of our management committee is made up of people and families of people with disabilities.

We offer support, advocacy, advice and information (among others) to make sure people live a life as inclusive and meaningful as possible. We believe everyone has a right to live the life they choose and not to become isolated just because they are different.

This week is Shared Lives Week so we’re celebrating just some of the local success stories.

Philip was referred to our Shared Lives service as he lived alone and was isolated. After a careful matching process, Philip was introduced to Shared Lives carer, Ian, which has transformed Philip’s life.

Since being introduced to each other, Philip and Ian have explored the borough and wider North West region together, visiting Sunshine House, Haigh Hall, Mesnes Park, the Imperial War Museum, Media City, Bygone Times and many local cafes along the way!

Ian has also introduced Philip to some regular groups and activities, such as Embrace, an organisation that offers support for people with disabilities, where Philip now volunteers.

Philip has discovered a love of gardening, inspired by helping Ian on his allotment, and has joined a local gardening group.

With the support offered by Ian, Philip has become much more independent, now feeling confident enough to travel on short bus journeys by himself and he is currently looking into joining a Tai Chi class.

In Shared Lives Week, we want to say a massive thank you to all of the Shared Lives carers, who, with support of the team at Wigan Council, help to make such a big difference to local people’s lives.

There are important changes to the law around Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards (DoLS) that may affect people who need care and support, as well as their families and carers.
We've come across this helpful video that explains the changes in a clear and accessible way
Take a few minutes to watch and learn more about what these changes could mean in practice.

🌟 We were thrilled to receive this really positive feedback from Alisha who has been part of our Path to Purpose project. Shared with permission from Alisha thank you so much for sharing 🌟

“My name is Alisha, and I am 26 years old. I have anxiety and ADHD, which have held me back for many years.
Recently, I took part in a four-week work trial at Embrace Wigan and Leigh through the Path to Purpose programme. When I first started the trial, I was very nervous because I didn’t know the shop or the people around me. I was especially unsure about working on the till and serving customers.
However, once I arrived at the shop, I was introduced to the staff and the other young people who help out there. This really helped me feel more comfortable and settled in.
During my placement, I worked on the till serving customers, helped create shop window displays, and priced and hung items on the shop floor. These experiences have really helped with my anxiety and have also built my confidence.
The staff have been so lovely, welcoming, and supportive. The praise and compliments I received from them encouraged me to push myself further and believe in my abilities.
I would especially like to thank Suzanne and Lynne for helping me believe that I can do it. Their support has meant so much to me.
Now that my four-week placement has come to an end, I am continuing as a volunteer at the shop, which I am really looking forward to. I am proud of how far I have come and excited to keep building my confidence and skills in the future”
