A celebration of 60 years in Freemasonry for John Webb

The meeting of Goodwill Lodge No. 7904, held on Friday 7th November at Chingford Masonic Hall, was a special and well-attended occasion. The event was honoured by the presence of Paul Tarrant, Provincial Grand Master, escorted by Provincial retinue together with many Provincial Grand Officers, both present and past, who gathered to celebrate the remarkable milestone of 60 years in Freemasonry for John Webb, a Past Provincial Grand Master.

Celebrating the people who make a real difference

Essex Freemasons are proud to sponsor the Unsung Hero Award at the Pride of Essex Awards 2026 — recognising individuals who go above and beyond for others without seeking recognition.

This award shines a light on those who quietly support their communities, give their time, and make a lasting impact on people’s lives.
If you know someone who deserves to be recognised for their kindness, dedication and selfless service, now is the time to put them forward.

Let’s give Essex’s everyday heroes the recognition they truly deserve

Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution Care Company Announcement

You may be aware of the announcement by the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution (RMBI) in respect of the proposed disposal of their care homes portfolio.

There has been speculation about the decision but please be assured that the decision has been made with the right motivations and with an eye to the masonic responsibilities the RMBI has always fulfilled.

53 years of dedication 👏

A special evening at Lodge of Beneficence No. 7978 saw Steve Ham installed as Worshipful Master, with more than 40 brethren in attendance and Assistant Provincial Grand Master John Singh present.

The highlight of the night was the presentation of Honorary Membership to Bill Vale, recognising an incredible 53 years of service to Freemasonry since his initiation in 1972 – a lifetime of commitment, friendship and contribution to the Craft.

A wonderful celebration of tradition, loyalty and enduring Masonic fellowship.

How a routine PSA test helped save my life

When Simon Harvey of the Fellowship and Unity Lodge No. 8680 dropped into a PSA screening session run by CHAPS (The Men’s Health Charity) and supported by Provincial Grand Lodge of Essex, he genuinely did not expect anything to come of it.

There was no dramatic reason for going. He had been working from home that day. A few friends mentioned they were attending. He had a gap between calls. He felt completely fine — no symptoms, no warning signs, nothing to suggest that anything might be wrong. So, he thought, “Why not?”

After a friendly chat with volunteers, he gave a small tube of blood for a PSA test and went home thinking little more about it.

Lodge of Beneficence honours 53 years of service

The Installation Meeting of the Lodge of Beneficence No. 7978 delivered ceremony, celebration and heartfelt recognition in equal measure when members gathered at Orsett Masonic Temple on Thursday 19 February.

More than 40 brethren filled the Temple, creating an atmosphere of strong attendance and unmistakable camaraderie. The occasion was further elevated by the presence of John Singh, Assistant Provincial Grand Master (APGM), whose visit was warmly received and added distinction to the evening’s proceedings.

Extending the hand of Essex north to Scotland

Brethren from St Osyth Priory Lodge No. 2063 and North Essex Round Table Lodge No. 9578 recently travelled north of the Border to share in fraternal fellowship with Scottish Masons, united by a common purpose: to meet, learn from, and celebrate the shared values that bind Masons across jurisdictions.

Following a visit to Rosslyn Chapel, they visited Lodge St Andrew No. 25 in St Andrews, where the Essex brethren observed a rehearsal for an Initiation Ceremony, offering a valuable opportunity to compare ritual practices and deepen their understanding of Scottish workings. The lodge room itself, with its beautifully painted dome and ornate tracing boards, reflected a shared reverence for symbolism and moral teaching. Differences in accent and expression only served to underline the richness of Freemasonry’s diverse traditions within a common framework of belief.
