Parents 1st UK: Essex Services

Parents 1st UK: Essex Services We specialise in effective volunteering and peer support during pregnancy, birth & beyond across Essex

Parents 1st is a Charity which specialises in peer support during the key life change of pregnancy, birth and becoming a parent. We provide peer support to families across Essex, more specifically, less advantaged communities. The approaches we use are based on clear and strong evidence of what works across the UK. As we all know, pregnancy, birth and becoming a parent is a life changing experienc

e. We pride ourselves in providing knowledge and increasing the confidence of new parents as they settle into their new roles. Babies thrive in a happy and responsive environment, so it is important to create a setting where new parents can feel positive and confident in themselves and their abilities. Every parent deserves support, and every baby deserves the best possible start in life! The heart of our work is ‘bridging the gap’ between more isolated or vulnerable parents and professionals’ services. We achieve this by harnessing help from within, building on the skills of experienced and trustworthy parents who live in these communities. Our passion is promoting community owned and effective peer support programmes that are delivered by and for local parents. We have developed an innovative ‘Pregnancy Pal and Birth Buddy’ programme in South Essex and support over 800 expectant and new parents each year. Our volunteer Pregnancy Pals and Birth Buddies are mothers, fathers, grandparents or carers who have personal qualities and life experience. They are ambassadors for their communities and are drawn from the same areas as the expectant and new parents they support. They establish trusting peer relationships as early as possible during pregnancy and offer support throughout pregnancy, during labour and birth if needed, and onto early family life. We also run a variety of coffee mornings, classes and workshops to provide extra support and important information to our local communities. From exercise sessions, antenatal classes and first aid to support specifically for dads, we have something for everyone! If you require support, you can visit our website below, and please do not hesitate to contact us with any questions!

This International Fathers' Mental Health Day, we're asking the question "How Are You Actually Doing, Dad?" Because dads are often overlooked in the perinatal period. Nobody really asks how they're doing.

Becoming a dad changes everything and it's not always easy to talk about. The pressure to hold it together, changes in relationships, sleep deprivation, financial stress - it all adds up.

1 in 10 dads will experience depression or anxiety during the perinatal period. You're not alone in finding it tough. Reach out, check in on a mate, and find support.

Parents 1st has a variety of resources available on our dedicated hub for dads and partners, The Other Half Hub (https://parents1st.org.uk/the-other-half-hub). Our mission is to ensure you never feel alone or overwhelmed, offering resources and peer support to help you navigate this transformative period.

The Other-Half Hub is here to support you through the highs and lows, whether you're dealing with feelings of isolation, anxiety, or concerns about finances and housing.

Happy Father’s Day to all dads!🌟

Today we celebrate not only dads, but all the father figures who show up with care, love and guidance — stepdads, grandads, uncles, carers, partners and mentors. Your presence matters more than you know.

Supporting others doesn’t mean you don’t need support yourself. Being a dad or father figure can be challenging, with sleepless nights, work pressures and the responsibility of caring for others. It’s okay not to have all the answers, and it’s okay to ask for help.

💙 To every dad and father figure:
Your mental health matters.
Your wellbeing matters.
You don’t have to be perfect.

This Father’s Day, let’s make space for understanding, support and open conversations. When dads and father figures feel supported and heard, families and communities grow stronger together 🤍

“Pregnancy is the only time when you can do nothing at all and still be productive.” 🤍

Growing a tiny human is work, even on the days you rest, pause, or simply get through. Be gentle with yourself, listen to your body, and remember that slowing down doesn’t mean you’re not doing enough. You already are. 💫
