This could be a letter to the whole amateur radio community. Thank you for all that you're doing to encourage the next generation into our shared hobby. Even the slightest effort can make a huge difference.

A great day for some radio experimentation with Jacob, MM7IFL, who was testing out a Slidewinder antenna that was donated to the club. He tested out tuning the antenna on different bands from 40m to 15m. He called CQ using SSB (voice) as well as CW(Morse code). He checked his callsign against the Reverse Beacon Network and he was heard as far away as Sweden. His lucky Yaesu hat must have been working as he managed a contact with HB9WOC in Switzerland!

And that's a wrap for Mr Aitken's primary school tours to launch our Space Station contact!
🛰️ Over 500 pupils presented to
🚀 7 primary schools visited
🔭 74 miles travelled

Over the past few days he's been to Thrumster Primary to talk to P1-7 and also Noss P5 and P6. They're all fully briefed on their questions task and the mission patch as well.

It's been an absolute pleasure visiting all our local primary schools and help inspire them a little about space, STEM and amateur radio. We all can't wait to see our pupils step in front of the microphone to ask our astronaut questions. Experiences like these can help plant a seed in our young folk to think about careers in STEM and who knows what types of jobs in space industries will be available when they grow up to become young adults!

Keep an eye out on this page for updates for our space contact later in the year. As well as inviting representatives from each school to the live event we will also be live streaming the contact for the whole of the world to enjoy with us.

73's for now from Mr Aitken MM0WIC

Another "wow" moment today at radio club as we listened to the satellite RS-44 as it passed by. Once we tuned into the frequency range of the linear transponder as it transited off the north coast of America, to our amazement we heard the "whisky alpha" station WA3YDZ from Philadelphia. 🛰️

During our Foundation licence lesson tonight, Isla, Aiden, Devin and Logan learned a bit about the magic behind HF radio communication. That is, how we use the ionosphere which is between 70 and 400 km above the earth to make contacts around the world. The time of day and time of year both play a huge part in where your signal lands. Making or listening to that first DX contact helps people really feel the magic of HF radio.

Mr Aitken also demonstrated the really useful SDRPlay nRSP remote SDR radio that the students can use in their own time using their school Chromebooks to listen on HF bands, building on their growing knowledge of amateur radio by just playing with the technology.

What a blast Mr Aitken had with all the P7's from Noss Primary today. We talked about what will happen on the day of our astronaut contact and the importance of a good question(they had some AMAZING questions that they're keeping secret 🤐). We played a game of "control the space station" where Archie and Rory acted as our remote space station whilst Charley directed the yagi antenna and Cara passed on the message via radio. We hope the lads weren't too tired after we made them run the length of the pitch!

Mr Aitken is really looking forward to seeing some of the questions they'll be submitting to NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration and ARISS - Amateur Radio on the International Space Station

Well done to Logan today who braved the cold to set up a SOTAbeams linked dipole in the school grounds for his first go on HF. We heard stations from Italy, Netherlands and the UK. We talked about dipoles, antenna resonance and SSB as a nice practical session after his Foundation course theory lesson last night.

Mr Aitken is coming to the end of his primary visits soon 🥲🥲🥲.
He had an absolute blast with Newton Park P6 this afternoon after visiting Bower Primary yesterday. We talked about:
❓How fast does the Space Station go?
❓How astronauts can sleep without a bed?
❓How do we know where the Space Station is?
❓How do astronauts p*e? (disclaimer: Mr Aitken advised the children not to p*e in their parents' vacuum cleaner but it's similar to a degree)
❓What's a Capri Sun got to do with the Space Station?
❓Why do you need such a big antenna?

They're away working on their mission patch designs and questions now, filled with knowledge about the ISS and space. Can't wait to see their questions and designs soon.

Mr Aitken had an absolute blast at Lybster Primary this morning. Lots of interesting questions, including "what inspired you to make this ISS contact happen?"

He explained that when he was little he wanted to be one of two things: an astronaut or Michael Jackson and there wasn't much chance of becoming the latter 😜

He did say that it's been a lifelong ambition to talk to an astronaut and what better way to do that than allow children in Caithness to be part of that experience. We're all really looking forward to seeing your mission patch designs and your questions for the astronaut.
Finally a huge thanks to all the helpers today who helped demonstrate the radio equipment. You were all stars ✨✨✨
