The Cat Welfare Group Passionate about cats and our community
REGISTERED CHARITY - 1189649 FERAL WORK
We are passionate about our feral and our TNR work.

We are a charity based on the south coast, with over 30 years experience of cat welfare and rescue, we are passionate about cats, their well-being and our community! RESCUE WORK
We rescue stray or abandoned cats and kittens and work to re-home them into secure, loving homes once they have undergone extensive medical checks/treatment and of course are old enough. In the case of feral cats, where th

ey cannot be domesticated, we will neuter them, address any health concerns and either return them to their original home if possible or alternatively find a suitable new home. When feral kittens are found, we work slowly to socialise them and transform them from hissy, spitty little fireballs, into loving and playful kittens. ORPHANS
When kittens have been abandoned or orphaned we have an expert team of carers and equipment, and can hand-rear around the clock, saving hundreds of defenceless lives since we began. ADOPTION
When you adopt with us, you can be certain that your cat or kitten has had the best care available. Included in your adoption;

Full veterinary assessment and health-check
Vaccination
Mircochip
One month of flea/worm treatment
Neutering
One month free PetPlan insurance

If you are looking to adopt a cat, please complete our adoption form on our website https://thecatwelfaregroup.org/adoption-form

Meet Annette and her football team

One of two little families who have arrived with us this week is this gorgeous young mum and her five kittens.

Introducing:
Mum - Annette (a net… get it?! 😆)
And her squad:
⚽ Bib⚽ Dribble⚽ Striker⚽ Keeper⚽ Boots
Mum is doing a fantastic job and the kittens are thriving. As always, every new family that comes into our care means more food, litter, flea treatment, worming, vaccinations, neutering and veterinary costs to fund. We couldn’t do it without your support.

Speaking of support…

A huge thank you to Lee Sherwood who is out battling the elements on his fundraising walk for The Cat Welfare Group. As you can see in his latest video, the wind is doing its absolute best to blow him into the next county!

Despite that, he keeps putting one foot in front of the other to help us continue saying “yes” to cats like Annette and her kittens when they need us most.

If you’d like to support Lee’s incredible efforts, every donation, no matter how small, makes a genuine difference.

And just like that, Tango’s babies have flown the nest… 🧡

Fanta, Sprite, Pepsi and Vimto left for their forever homes today.

It feels like only yesterday that Tango surprised us all by arriving as a supposedly male stray, only to reveal she was expecting a family of her own.

Since then we’ve watched these four grow from tiny newborns into confident, playful little characters with personalities all of their own.

Over the past few weeks we’ve seen their bonds develop and their friendships form, which is why they have gone to their new homes in two pairs. Three girls and one boy, all heading off to wonderful families and exciting new adventures.

Saying goodbye is always bittersweet, but this is exactly what rescue is about. Seeing kittens who were born safe, loved and cared for leave to start the next chapter of their lives with families of their own.

Be happy, little ones. We can’t wait to watch you grow. 🧡🐾

What a rollercoaster 48 hours this has been.

When Smokey arrived with us after his road traffic accident, we knew he had suffered significant pelvic injuries. What we didn’t know was quite how severe the impact had been, which we now believe to have been a side impact

Yesterday he was assessed at Lumbry Park Veterinary Specialists, where further investigations revealed that the force of the collision wasn’t limited to his pelvis. The circled area on the X-rays shows fractures of the lateral spinous processes in his lower back. Thankfully these fractures don’t require surgical repair, but they do demonstrate just how significant the trauma was and that the impact affected far more than his pelvis alone.

His PCV is currently 19%, so he remains under very close monitoring.

One piece of good news is that Smokey has now been neutered while under anaesthetic. The photographs show extensive bruising around his testicles and surrounding tissues, further evidence of the tremendous force he sustained during the accident.

He also underwent ultrasound assessment of his abdomen to look for any hidden injuries associated with the trauma.

The plan now is for the orthopaedic team to assess him on Monday and determine the best way forward for his pelvic injuries. Until then, Smokey will remain at Lumbry Park Veterinary Specialists, where he is receiving round-the-clock care.

We cannot thank the team at Lumbry enough for everything they are doing for this boy. 🩶

Meanwhile, while Smokey fights his own battle, our incredible supporter Lee Sherwood continues his fundraising challenge. He has just sent us a video update at 35 miles in and thanks to your generosity an amazing £1,400 has already been raised!!

To everyone who has donated, shared, sponsored Lee, sent messages, crossed fingers and wished Smokey well - thank you. We genuinely couldn’t do this without you. We are still quite some way off what Smokey needs, so if you can please help us to help him, we’d be so grateful

https://www.justgiving.com/campaign/tcwgsmokey

Please keep Smokey in your thoughts over the weekend as we wait for Monday’s orthopaedic assessment and the next chapter in his journey.

🚨URGENT APPEAL FOR SMOKEY 🚨

Meet Smokey.

On Wednesday we were asked if we could help this handsome boy after he was involved in a road traffic accident. He is not microchipped, he is not neutered and nobody has come forward to claim him. Another boy let down by humans

The honest truth? We are absolutely not in a financial position to take on another major case right now.

But the alternative for Smokey was euthanasia.

His X-rays revealed multiple serious injuries including:

💔 A displaced sacroiliac fracture/luxation
💔 A significantly displaced fracture of the right ischium
💔 Fractures of the pelvic floor
💔 Concerns for a possible avulsion of the prepubic tendon and abdominal wall injury

Despite everything, Smokey has remained incredibly sweet and gentle throughout.

Today he is on his way to referral for specialist assessment so we can find out exactly what treatment he needs and whether surgery can give him the future he deserves.

At the same time, our incredible supporter Lee Sherwood has just set off on his fundraising walk to raise money for cats like Smokey. We couldn’t be more grateful for people like Lee who help us say “yes” when every sensible financial decision says “no”.

So today we are running an urgent Fiver Friday for Smokey

If you could spare just £5, it would make a huge difference towards the costs we know are coming because right now we simply can’t take on anymore who need us

Can you spare a fiver for Smokey today?

https://www.justgiving.com/campaign/tcwgsmokey

Every donation, share and message of support helps us continue fighting for cats who otherwise wouldn’t get a chance.

Please wish Smokey luck as he heads off to see the specialists today and wish Lee the best of luck as he starts his South Downs walk

From stray to treasured family member

You will remember Tango’s story.

Before Tango first came into our care, we were told firstly he was owned and lived nearby then he was a stray, an unneutered tomcat living outside and relying on the kindness of staff at a local hospital, where she had been fed and looked after for some time. Despite being told to leave him alone, we checked.

Not only was Tango not a boy, she was heavily pregnant and soon gave birth to four beautiful kittens: Fanta, Sprite, Pepsi and Vimto. What followed was weeks of devoted motherhood as she raised her little fizzy-pop family with patience, love and absolute dedication.

There were moments when things could have gone very differently. It would have been easy to overlook her as “just another stray”, but we didn’t. The hospital staff who cared for her, our volunteers, fosterers and veterinary teams all believed she deserved a chance.

Today, Tango is exactly where she was always meant to be.

This photo was taken in her forever home, adopted by one of the nurses from the hospital that first fed and cared for her when she was living outside. They watched her journey unfold from the very beginning and completely fell in love with her.

And just look at her. Not a care in the world. Perfectly loafed. Perfectly content. Perfectly home. 🥹

We are incredibly proud of Tango, proud of everyone who helped her, and proud that we didn’t give up on her when her future was uncertain.

From homeless stray, to surprise mum, to cherished family member.

Happy ever after, Tango. You deserve every second of it. 🧡🐾

Blind cats never cease to amaze me.

This little chap is only 7 weeks old and has no vision at all, yet watch what happens in this video.

Over the last few days, he’s carefully mapped out his room. He’s worked out that the small area by the door is the perfect place to play because his toys can’t roll too far away. In fact, he’s become so clever that he now deliberately carries Mr Fuzzy Ball, his favourite toy, there before he starts playing.

I managed to catch it on video.

Watch closely as he leaves the toy area and uses the side of the litter tray as a landmark to orientate himself. He brushes against it, recognises exactly where he is, and turns confidently towards where he wants to go next.

People often feel sorry for blind cats, but they really are extraordinary. They build mental maps of their surroundings, use their whiskers, hearing, scent and memory, and adapt in ways that never fail to impress me.

This tiny boy may not be able to see the world, but he’s already showing us that there are many different ways to navigate it.

A little update on our three surviving kittens.

Thank you to those following their journey and for asking how they're doing.

We have Mouse, with her adorable little moustache, her eyes are clearing, she is still a bit snuffly but is otherwise doing brilliantly. She's full of character and doesn't let anything hold her back.

TC was flat when he came in and we did not think he would make it. 5 days on he's bright, happy and growing stronger every day. He has has one poorly eye that is being treated but otherwise doing great

And then there's Magoo. Sweet little Magoo is completely non-visual and will sadly need both eyes, or rather the remains of where his eyes should be, removing when he's old enough and strong enough for surgery. Despite everything he has been through, he is an absolute joy. He doesn't know he's different and after mapping his room he’s bombing around

While we celebrate how well these three are doing, our hearts are still heavy for the three siblings we lost. We fought as hard as we could for all six, but sometimes we are just too late.

The reality is that cases like these come with enormous emotional and financial costs and we have reached a point where we simply cannot take on any more major veterinary cases right now without additional support.

Every donation, every share and every kind word helps us continue saying "yes" to the cats and kittens who have nowhere else to go.

Thank you for standing with us through the highs and the heartbreaks. We couldn't do this without you

💔 An update on six tiny kittens…

This is not the update I wanted to be writing.

Three of the six kittens have now gained their wings and become tiny stars in the sky.

Since Thursday night, they had been receiving veterinary care, but despite every effort, their little bodies simply couldn’t cope. At seven weeks old, each kitten weighed only just over 200g - around the weight a healthy one-week-old kitten should be. Their temperatures were barely above 34°C, and they were desperately underdeveloped and fragile.

We are utterly heartbroken.

The reality is that this should never have happened. These babies were failed long before they reached us, and that is a difficult truth to accept. As a rescue, we see sadness far too often, but some cases hit harder than others. This is one of them.

Despite everything they endured, these tiny souls knew comfort, cuddles and love in their final moments. I am truly grateful to the incredible team at Heathside Veterinary Surgery who cared for them and me with such compassion and dignity.

Sleep peacefully, little ones. You mattered. You were loved. You will not be forgotten.

There is a brighter note amongst the sadness. Their three surviving siblings are together, safe, and doing very well. They are eating, gaining strength and showing us the resilience that kittens can have when given the chance. We are cautiously hopeful for them and will continue to do everything we can.

If you would like to support the ongoing care of these kittens and the many others who arrive needing urgent help, please consider donating via our fundraising link. Every pound helps us provide emergency veterinary treatment, specialist care and a fighting chance to kittens like these. We are in a very fragile position at the moment and need to urgently raise funds

We also currently have a competition running, with some wonderful prizes on offer, so please do take a look. By entering, you’ll be helping us continue our work while giving yourself a chance to win too.

Thank you, as always, for standing beside us through both the happy endings and the heartbreaking losses. ❤️🐾🌈
