Would you like to know how we support the community, here are some Statistics from January 2026 until today we have had:
*17 young people in our Lowther Hostel
*11 young women in our Mother and Baby Hostel and 4 children all under 2 years old.
36 years we have been here, we are still in huge demand in our community. Here is a case study from Alfie who began his journey in our Lowther hostel:
Case Study – Alfie
Alfie came to us due to having a toxic relationship with his mother, he didn’t know who his father was and he had got in with the wrong crowd and was sofa surfing.
To fit in he would do drugs and alcohol with older men and women, he would then lash out in bars and public places, he would also go on to shoplift to feed his lifestyle. Alfie was 18 years old and spiralling.
He came to us polite, yet we could sense he was unpredictable, we knew he would be a challenge. He settled in well and followed the rules, the first 2 weeks were the most frustrating as he was detoxing, he was paranoid and thought people were looking for him, he was also very pale and tired and had no appetite. However, with support staff keeping a close eye on him, he started to look better, he started to engage more with staff and became a very likeable young man.
In support sessions he claimed he has decided to change his life, he didn’t want to be that person any longer and with that he cut ties with his old friends and decided to apply for jobs, he wanted part time to start with as he was having therapy sessions and wanted to concentrate on his sobriety and his own well-being, which we completely agreed with.
Alfie was a model service user he always followed the house rules, was polite and chatty with support staff and he contributed with cleaning and cooking.
After Alfie had secured a job at Centre Parks, we decided he may be ready to live independently, we had a “move on” flat available and this way he could have more freedom, yet he was still supported by us should anything go array. Alfie thrived in the flat, he kept it clean and tidy, he attended every appointment and support session and paid his rent and bills without prompting, he was ready for his own property.
After 8 months of being in our “move on” flat Alfie was successful in bidding on a flat just outside Carlisle, which was the perfect location for work and it was close to the city centre, he was delighted.
Support staff helped Alfie with a list of things he needed for his new flat, we were able to provide some things from our donations, but he needed a hoover and an air fryer, which with the help of funding we were able to provide for him, it made his transition that much easier.
It was wonderful to watch Alfie leave, off on his new start as an independent young man with such a positive future ahead of him. We have kept in touch with Alfie, he is still in his flat, he now works full time and attends college in the evenings. We are all very proud at how he has turned himself around.
