A HELPING HAND FROM ROTARY

Whitchurch Rotary has a fund that gives financial help to local groups and individuals.

The ‘Helping Hands’ project was set up to help people and projects that are facing immediate needs or challenges.

Grants could support an individual or group that needs help ... or kickstart a small initiative that could make a real community difference in the town.

Application details, offering choices of online, email or paper forms, are now on the Whitchurch Rotary website - https://whitchurchrotary.org.uk

“Our aim is to move quickly, make fast decisions and then give the grant within three days while the need is at its greatest,” says Whitchurch Rotary’s President Andy Danton.

“There might be other ways of getting money but it often takes too long and damage is already done before it arrives. In that time a health emergency, a struggling project, or a personal crisis has taken its toll. We want ‘Helping Hands’ to be there, with rapid financial assistance, when it’s most needed – not weeks later.”

Typical uses could be to help cover the cost of a new school uniform ... to overcome a health problem ... to meet the cost of visiting someone in hospital if there is no access to a car ... or launching a small-scale local community project that promises lasting benefits.

We apply conditions as we can’t give money to a profit-making venture nor a large-scale project that requires long-term funding. We do not support something that might endanger health and wellbeing or the environment. Rotary is neither a political nor religious organisation, therefore ‘Helping Hands’ monies are used to support charitable or community projects or to alleviate personal need.

After the blooms enjoyed this summer, work was needed this morning, so members of Inner Wheel and Whitchurch Rotary were working together to cut back bushes and tidy the gardens at the end of Pepper Street in Whitchurch. Many thanks to Rotarians Ian Fawcett, Brian Acty, Walter Schafer and Jeremy Fitton for their help, alongside Clair Schafer, Sue Simcock and President Mo Cage of Inner Wheel.

On Tuesday evening this week President Andy Danton welcomed Keith Budden (as pictured) to give a talk on electric cars, and then partake in a Q&A session that followed. Keith is Head of International Partnerships at the Centre of Excellence for zero emission vehicles and has experience in sustainable development, public policy and programme delivery, in the UK, Europe and in East and West Africa. Cenex is the leading independent, not for profit organisation providing advice and support on electric and hydrogen vehicles and the associated energy infrastructure to the public and private sectors.

In the context of rising diesel prices are hydrogen and electric cars now more viable choices? Electric vehicles, or EVs, are more popular and the science shows a lot more efficient. In 2015 only 1 in 100 new cars sold globally was electric; 1%. Today, it is 1 in 5 20%. Largely as a result of significant falling battery prices, expanding charging networks, and government incentives to make EV’s more affordable. In addition Keith explained there are now cross pavement solutions for those who don’t have their own drive; and schemes to rent your charge point to neighbours who don’t have their own.
Keith also talked about the groundbreaking work on vehicle to grid systems, enabling vehicle batteries to discharge back into the grid especially at times of need that in itself can create additional income.

Thank you to all those who came to visit our Blackberry Fair stall on Saturday. In addition to our tombola we sold 1,000 crocus corms. Purple crocuses have become a familiar and very visible way for Whitchurch Rotary to raise awareness of Rotary’s role in the global effort to
eradicate polio. The crocuses used for this activity, Crocus tommasinianus
‘Ruby Giant’, prefer a sunny position where soil does not become waterlogged in winter. Some shade from deciduous trees is acceptable but avoid planting too close to tree trunks or beneath evergreen trees. They can also be planted in containers or pots. Lawned areas and grass banks usually give very good results. However, the grass must be left unmown after the crocuses emerge until the leaves have died back naturally, so choose a site where slightly longer grass will not cause a problem. It is also a good idea to give the area a final cut in late December, before the crocuses emerge, so that the flowers are not hidden by long grass when they appear.

Thanks to all those who attended this morning, at our last car boot sale of the year. Indeed as with all our sales this year we have enjoyed your positivity and been blessed by good weather and sellers with a wide range of goods to be sold.
We aim to be back next year and again feature plenty of space per seller, a calm and friendly atmosphere, with few commercial traders compared to casual sellers, making it a genuine treasure-hunt environment.
