I quiet night for the Street Angels so nothing to report other than we were able to provide pizza to a homeless couple. I am therefore going to try and spread some cheer by sharing my favourite poem, “Smiling is Infectious” by Spike Milligan….

Had a very pleasant patrol with the Street Angels tonight. The town wasn’t particularly busy but everyone seemed in good spirits. We endeavoured to add to overall safety by picking up 5 glasses, 6 bottles and sweeping up two lots of broken glass.
We handed out 2 pairs of flip flops. Here’s one grateful young lady proudly showing off her flip flops to prove that sometimes comfort is more important than fashion!

Whitby Street Angels began their patrol on Saturday night with a “torch off” which Steve won, Pam politely accepted second place and Ethan adjudicated. Well we have to make sure our equipment is working!😄
We met a lovely family group enjoying a spectacular BBQ and hotpot. We enjoyed some jackfruit together.
There was a very nice vibe along Pier Road.
At one point we had reason to enjoy the wonderful hospitality of The Treasury. A big thank you to Ali for that, you certainly are an honorary Street Angel.
There were a few that were worse for wear but thanks to Steve these were quickly sorted.
No rough sleepers. All in all one of our most pleasant evenings.

Whitby Street Angels are supporting World Su***de Prevention Day.

Tomorrow - 10 September 2026 - is World Su***de Prevention Day, and across the country, organisations and communities are helping to reduce stigma and make su***de easier to talk about. Su***de is complex and shaped by wider circumstances, but reducing stigma and helping people feel able to talk openly, ask directly and find support is an important part of prevention.

Please help by sharing sources of help, starting conversations and signposting people to the Hub of Hope website, or to Samaritans on 116123.

The Hub of Hope is the UK's largest and most comprehensive mental health support directory, bringing local, national, peer, community, and NHS services together in one place.

There were no serious incidents in town last night, although there was a fight outside the George which was quickly dealt with by door staff and the police.
We were kept busy with conversations, a few inebriated individuals who needed assistance of one sort or another and one female sleeping rough. We were able to provide this lady with food to make her more comfortable.
At the end of our shift we encountered an altercation between 3 individuals near the swing bridge. This seemed to have the potential to escalate but thankfully we were able to diffuse the situation and those involved walked off in opposite directions.
These happy revellers posing with Jules were just a few of the people we enjoyed talking to last night.

The Street Angels had a good shift on Saturday night. We helped an inebriated gentleman to get a taxi, gave directions to a few people and chatted to numerous visiting pirates!
About 12.30 we heard that there were two people trespassing on the Endeavour and climbing the rigging but by the time we got there they had left. Just after that 2 fire engines and 2 police vans appeared and word went round that at least one person had entered the water. After at least 90 minutes the CCTV established that 2 people who had been in the water had safely exited and the emergency services were stood down.

How fortunate are we, at Whitby Street Angels? We heard about an opportunity to access funds via a grant from the Woodsmith Foundation; we applied for £250 to buy flip-flops and were successful. We sourced some at Matalan for £2.50 a pair... and then they had a crazy Bank Holiday Monday sale and we could get them for £2.00 a pair - making our money go further! We took delivery of 125 pairs of flip flops in seven bags on Wednesday, and this is what they look like...
So, thank you to the Woodsmith Foundation for the grant, Matalan (Scunthorpe) for their super deal and great service, and the two committee members that made it all happen!
