🐒 Sometimes, watching primates just be primates is the best way to show how much we care about them 🐒

This international primate day we want to celebrate all the beautiful social media content that celebrates primates in naturalistic settings. Imagery online which shows primates in close contact with humans, whether as pets, wearing clothes, in selfies or as entertainment props directly impacts the welfare of primates worldwide, as well as their global conservation 💔

Sharing naturalistic imagery, of primates behaving in a way they would in the wild, is the best way to celebrate these amazing species 💚

This is the final "Share Savvy Saturday" post and is a good example of what should be supported and shared.

Wildlife images do not always need to show an animal behaving naturally in the wild to be appropriate.

This photograph clearly shows a genuine veterinary setting. The pigeon is receiving professional treatment from trained veterinary surgeons, suitable PPE is being used and the handling is necessary for the bird’s welfare.

Images like this can help the public understand the specialist care injured wildlife may need, while showing that the animal is being handled for a clear and justified reason.

Before sharing an image of wildlife in care, consider whether it shows:

🩺 a clear veterinary or rehabilitation context
🧤 suitable PPE and professional procedures
❤️ handling which is necessary for the animal’s welfare
🏥 good standards of treatment and housing

Throughout today "Share Savvy Saturday" we are sharing examples of images which are good and not so good to share on social media.

This image shows a young wild bird which has been rescued as a nestling, reared on its own, sitting on someone’s shoulder while being hand-fed pieces of processed human food.

Young birds have very specific nutritional, behavioural and developmental needs. Raising one alone, encouraging close human contact or feeding an unsuitable diet can affect its health and reduce its chances of returning successfully to the wild. No wild animal or bird should ever be domesticated - it can always be avoided.

Sharing images like this may encourage others to copy the behaviour without understanding the risks.

A rescued baby bird should be assessed by an experienced wildlife rescue organisation as soon as possible.

Throughout today we are highlighting "Share Savvy Saturday" and highlighting the need to share only appropriate images and videos online.

Not every image showing a person holding a wild animal is inappropriate.

This photograph was taken during a genuine wildlife rescue. The rescuer is wearing suitable protective equipment, the handling is necessary and the clothing clearly identifies the professional rescue context.

Images like this can help explain:

🚑 how wildlife rescues are carried out
🧤 why suitable protective equipment matters
🦊 how animals are safely handled
🏥 why trained rescue organisations are needed

The key question is whether the interaction is necessary and focused on the animal’s welfare—not whether it simply makes an appealing photograph.
