BHCT Trustee Inspectors visited Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Wavendon https://www.stmaryswavendon.co.uk in connection with the PCCs application for financial assistance to repair the gable end earlier this month, where coping stones had fallen off the east end. This grant application will be reviewed at the forthcoming Trustees' Meeting in October. Currently the temporary waterproofing is holding up, but this work is needed urgently to prevent water ingress. Luckily the fallen coping stones are in reasonable condition and can probably be put back and secured. Trustees noted the Duke of Bedford was required to donate coal or wood annually in August or September for the poor; an obligation he seems to have forgotten about recently!

BHCT Trustee Inspectors were welcomed to St. Mary's Haversham http://www.thelampchurches.com earlier this month to view their extensive renovation works with a view to offering a grant to assist. Trustees were impressed by the ambition and determination of the PCC with this impressive project. In addition to inspecting the renovations, PCC representatives pointed out to Trustees the lovely sun dial on the south porch, the guardian imp on the south window, and the fact that St. John the Baptist had six toes! BHCT will be updating St Mary's PCC with the results of their application shortly.

Bucks Historic Churches Trust is pleased to Support this year's National Church Awards.

The National Church Awards – the “BAFTAs for churches” – has begun its search for the best churches in the UK, with nominations now open to find 15 winners across five categories, with several awards reserved for churches in the four home nations.

The awards recognise achievements in conservation, tourism and volunteer work. Nominations are welcomed from churches, chapels and meeting houses across the UK, which are currently open for worship, with all churches, chapels and meeting houses invited to take part. This includes those cared for by a single building Trust, and we will accept one nomination from multi building Trusts. And for the many church groups in the UK that don’t have a dedicated space for worship, nominations can still be made through the Volunteer and Lifetime Achievements categories. This year the awards have been inspired by the work and legacy of Lord Patrick Cormack, following his death in February. Recognised as a champion of church buildings, Lord Cormack dedicated his life to helping to keep the UK’s churches open and in use – working with many different organisations to make this happen. An expert panel of judges will review all entries, selecting around 45 finalists and 15 winners. The awards will be presented at a prestigious ceremony held in the chapter house of Lincoln Cathedral on 22 October, an event which will also be live-streamed.
