Weyforward

Weyforward is changing... Our efforts have always been to make Weymouth as eco-friendly as possible.

Permanently closed.

Weyforward spawned The Ideas League to generate ideas for how to improve the town; founded the sea swimming centre at Greenhill (before the swimmers were unlawfully evicted); stopped the appalling unsustainable Peninsula development put forward by the council in 2018 by crowdfunding the fees for a planning consultant; hired six young people during the pandemic lockdown under Kickstart to get some

sustainability projects going (five out of six after the programme are now in full time employment or education) and now we created The Circular Shop, now closed, as a hub for all products and services that was part of the circular economy and created zero waste.

Everything changes...as is this page and the primary focus of Weyforward. We've had a challenging and rewarding time since our inception as a page in 2013 when we tried very hard to persuade Weymouth & Portland Borough Council to build something beautiful, beneficial and sustainable on Weymouth's peninsula by introducing them to one of the countries very best architects and a community friendly sustainable developer with access to the funds to build it and provide the council with an income in perpetuity (hence the URL of this page). But hey, you can lead a horse to water...

We've launched The Ideas League for local schools which generated ideas from young people on how to improve the area. We've founded two Community Interest Companies. We've opened a dedicated sea swimming centre promoting mental and physical good health and sea swim safety. We've taught people how to use their smartphones to do creative and economically beneficial stuff for themselves and their lives. We've mentored six young people coming out of Covid lockdown which spawned The Circular Shop and got them all back into full time education or employment. The shop was a commercial space dedicated to goodness, sustainability, zero waste and useful local products and services at ridiculously affordable prices. The shop is now shut, unfortunately, but, everything changes, no?

The world is changing rapidly. Don't think those changes won't impact the local. They already are. Look around you.

So we are changing...we have some ideas...we will keep diving for foraged seaweed and do some other stuff not entirely unrelated to health and well-being. It might not even be in Weymouth...so this page might vanish, just as it appeared, in a flash of inspiration.

Thanks so much to everyone in Weymouth & Portland who have engaged with our 'crazy' schemes over the years. We have made a lot of friends and hope we have helped a few people and inspired a few more, especially our younger residents. Thanks for the memories.

Jason (and I'm sure Baz would agree, he normally does 🙂)

Get down there (next time!) with your broken stuff...

We don't just fix sewing machines - bring along your broken electricals, electronics, clocks, binoculars, jewellery, tools for sharpening, teddy bears - in fact anything you can carry in. There's loads of free parking, tea/coffee and cakes, and you can sit with a repair volunteer and maybe learn a bit about the thing you've brought in.

Southill Community Centre, Saturday 18 October, 10:00 am to 12:30 pm.
