❤️ Volunteer Week 2026 ❤️

As Volunteers' Week comes to a close, we're reflecting on the impact our volunteers have every day.

Rosey says: "I feel privileged to be part of a charity that changes lives. I feel the experience has broadened my own outlook and enriched my own life."

Nicky says volunteering gives her huge satisfaction and that she often finds herself staying longer than planned because "the time flies by."

Our volunteers support guests in many different ways, but they all have one thing in common – they care.

Rosey and Nicky both volunteer on a regular basis, but The Bus Shelter also works with some volunteers just when their skills are required, such as handyman, plumbing, electrician, cooking or van driving.

If you've ever thought about volunteering, perhaps Rosey's advice says it best:
"Give us a go. It's not for everyone but at least walk through that door... or gate. You may be surprised."

❤️ Volunteer Week 2026 ❤️

Volunteer Nicky joined The Bus Shelter Dorset after moving to the area and quickly became part of the team.

She says: "The Bus Shelter family is an environment where people provide strength together and where seemingly small gestures of kindness go a long way towards helping the healing process."

For Nicky, volunteering might mean baking, sharing a cup of tea, sorting donations, helping with activities or encouraging guests in the garden.

She explains how simple acts of support can help build confidence: "Having an informal chat over a cuppa and hobby can develop soft skills and common ground."

Thank you, Nicky, and all our volunteers who help create comfort, security and hope for the people we support.

❤️ Volunteers' Week 2026 ❤️

This week we're celebrating the amazing volunteers who help make The Bus Shelter Dorset the special place it is.

When Rosey first visited the charity, she says she was "immediately impressed with the dedication and commitment of the volunteers" and was struck by the "non-judgemental and mutual respect afforded the guests."

"I just knew this was a family I wanted to be part of."

Today, Rosey helps with everything from gardening and maintenance to errands and practical support for guests.

We are incredibly grateful for every volunteer who gives their time to support our guests.
Their compassion, commitment and kindness make a lasting difference to both our charity and the people we support.

Thank you to every volunteer who gives their time, skills and kindness to support our guests.

🌼 May at The Bus Shelter Dorset 🌼

May has been full of colour, connection, and community spirit — and we’re so grateful to everyone who’s been part of it 💓

🌱 A huge thank you for the plant donations
Your generosity has transformed our site!! We’ve been busy repotting, refreshing, and brightening up the space, and it’s already making such a difference to the atmosphere for our guests.

🧘‍♀️ Creative writing
We were delighted to welcome Tanya this month for a taster session. Our guests turned out in great numbers and really embraced the experience.

🎓 Dorset Recovery Education bitesize session
We also welcomed Dorset Recovery Education Centre for a short session on self compassion. Several guests signed up for courses and we look forward to welcoming Jay and Syb back again soon.

🦙 More volunteering at the alpaca farm and Wraxhall farm
Our visits to the farms continue to be a highlight. Guests have been rolling up their sleeves, learning new skills, and enjoying the calm, grounding environment.

🌊 Community Expo on the seafront
We loved meeting so many of you at the Community Expo. It was a brilliant chance to share more about what we do, answer questions, and connect with people who care about rough sleeping in Dorset.

🍳 Get Dorset Cooking – Live!
A real standout this month was attending the Get Dorset Cooking live event hosted by The Friendly Food Club. It was great fun and we’ve already seen new recipes and renewed enthusiasm in the kitchen back at the bus.

🎒 Puddletown School – Make Your Mark Project
A special moment this month came from three pupils at Puddletown School who chose to support us through their Make Your Mark project. They collected and donated “set‑up packs” for guests moving into the Bus — a thoughtful and practical gift that means so much.
The boys visited the bus to learn more about our work, and we loved showing them around and inspiring their project.

Thank you to everyone who has supported us, visited us, donated, volunteered, or simply cheered us on this month. Your kindness keeps our community thriving 💛

🌼 April Round-Up at The Bus Shelter Dorset 🌼

April has been a busy and positive month for us, with brighter days, plenty of fresh air, and lots of progress for our guests 🌞

🐑 Lambing Season Continues at Wraxhall Farm Project 🐑
It’s been full flow at the farm this month, with our guests continuing to get involved in lambing sessions. They’ve worked incredibly hard, embraced the outdoors, and picked up new skills along the way — it’s been amazing to see their confidence grow.

🦙 A Special Alpaca Experience 🦙
One of our guests had the opportunity to go alpaca walking this month, which they thoroughly enjoyed! It’s even led to them moving into a volunteering role — a brilliant step forward and something to be really proud of 💛

🌸 Planting & Garden Refresh 🌸
There’s been lots of colour added around the site as we’ve been busy planting flowers in planters and pots. A big thank you to our wonderful volunteer Nicky for helping bring everything to life — it’s made such a difference to the space 🌼

🍳 Cooking with Nicky 🍳
We’ve also spent some time in the kitchen this month, cooking alongside our volunteer Nicky. It’s been a great opportunity for guests to build confidence, learn new skills, and enjoy preparing meals together — with some very tasty results too!

🏡 Another Move-On Success 🏡
Another month, another fantastic move into permanent accommodation for one of our guests! It was all hands on deck to make it happen, and we couldn’t be happier for them as they start this next chapter.

🚐 Thank You for Your Support 🚐
A special thank you to Andy at Dorset Vehicle Rentals for providing discounted van hire to support the move — your kindness made a huge difference.

🔨 Incredible Support from Mildren Construction Limited🔨
A huge, huge thank you to Mildren Construction for their incredibly generous support. They’ve finished our brand new steps to all of our pods, installed outside lighting, and helped with several other improvements around the site. We are so grateful — your support has made a real impact on both safety and day-to-day life here 🙏

Thank you to everyone who continues to support us — April has been full of growth and teamwork 🌈
