The Lantern Trust

The Lantern Trust The Lantern is an independent registered charity that was founded in 1983 to help vulnerable people across the Dorset area.

The Lantern is an independent registered charity that was founded in 1983 to help vulnerable and marginalized people in the Weymouth & Portland area. The Lantern aims to bring a lasting change in people’s lives through a dedicated service meeting people’s practical, emotional and personal aftercare needs. Our ethos is one of social inclusion and we aim to break cycles of disadvantage and dependenc

y. Working closely and professionally with other agencies is a key aspect to the Lanterns work which has been established over several years. Our customers have a varied range of personal concerns including mental health problems, offending behavior, addiction, homelessness and all personal crises. We aim to meet these needs through a wide range of services including advocacy, crisis response, front line practical assistance and welfare benefits, housing & accommodation support and help through the Lanterns assisted rent deposit scheme. Our ethos throughout our work is to empower the individual and at all times encourage personal choice and responsibility. The building of lasting trusting relationships with our customers are the foundation on which all our work is built on, the Lantern continues to be a place where laughter, friendship and hope are very apparent.

Our hub provision represents more than co-location. It represents partnership and collaboration. At the Lantern, we believe that in order to meet our communities needs, partnership is the only way.

This week, our CEO Mike Graham and St John's Vicar Tom Coopey, signed an extension to our lease at Hope House. The hub not onto represents our base for Access Wellbeing Hubs, but our partnership with local churches as one of our stakeholders.

Thank you to the Parish for the opportunity and collaboration. Hope House is now thriving as only of our hubs 🤝❤️

Community is defined as " A community is a social unit of people who share something in common, such as a geographical location, identity, values, or interests. It provides a sense of belonging, connection, and mutual support, and can exist in physical neighborhoods or through online and professional networks"

Our community is amazing. Their support has enabled us to grow into our new location at The Lantern Community Hub. Yet another front door to all Lantern services.

Our CEO's reflections of the last few weeks 👏

A week of reminders of why collaboration is key. Often as leaders, well, for me anyway, it's easy to get into the mindset of raising funding and budgets. This week I visited some of The Lantern Trust projects and was simply amazed by the work of my teams and the work of partners based within our hub...

Lantern Trust | Weymouth & Portland SPOA Launch

A huge milestone for our community — Weymouth & Portland’s new Single Point of Access (SPOA) is now live.

This marks an important step in Dorset’s wider Access Wellbeing transformation, creating a simpler, faster and more connected way for people to access community mental health support. Instead of navigating multiple routes, residents can now be referred through one single referral and triage pathway, reducing delays and ensuring people reach the right support at the right time.

Our local SPOA brings together a multidisciplinary team — NHS mental health practitioners, administrative colleagues and our own Lantern, Access Wellbeing Coordinators — working side‑by‑side to review referrals, share expertise and provide timely, compassionate responses for those who need us.

We’re proud to be part of this partnership NHS Dorset Dorset HealthCare University NHS Foundation Trust The Lantern Trust Access Wellbeing Hubs, all committed to improving access to mental health and wellbeing support.

Thank you to everyone involved in bringing this to life. This is a real step forward for our community — and we’re excited for what it means for the people of Weymouth and Portland.

Here’s to a future where getting help is simpler, clearer and more connected.

The Lantern remains here for you.

Our CEO, Mike Graham says -

"All Lantern services look to bring support services direct to our communities. Our multi-agency hubs are physically based in communities to reduce the barriers to support our customers face. We operate a 'no wrong door' approach, which means that whichever service you enter, you are able to access all Lantern support services. The work at Hope House and our Access Wellbeing Hubs team is changing the way our community is able to access mental health and well being support. The SPOA is yet another milestone for more joined up and accessible services. I am proud of my whole Access Wellbeing team and proud of our wider partnerships with BCHA Help & Care Dorset Mind Harmony Mental Health Bridport Dorset"

For 43 years we have built a support offer that covers all aspects of our customers and communities support needs. Our approach actively looks for collaboration to reduce the barriers to support our customers face.

In 2020, ourselves, Dorset Council and partners, begun a journey together. The aim was to build a broad and resilient pathway for all rough sleepers in the Dorset Council area. We believe that everyone deserves a roof and with the right support, can once again thrive. The Rough Sleepers Pathway led to the Lantern being funded for its WASP and ETE teams. The teams assertively and alongside our customers, build a whole person support offer. The offer enables our customers to not only find accommodation but sustain it and once again thrive.

This week, David moved into his forever home 🏠 well done David on 🙌
