Lorton Meadows Barn Owl Web Cam Several years ago an old barn was refurbished at our Lorton Meadows Nature Reserve.

We installed a nest box & camera & now we are able to watch as our pair of barn owls raise their chicks!

πŸ¦‰Barn owl updateπŸ¦‰

Although there has been some concern about the empty nest box, we have noticed our resident pair disappear in previous winters, only to return ahead of the breeding season. We know they have an alternative roosting site somewhere, as both habitually desert the box every summer when the growing owlets become too demanding to live with. We hope to see the pair return by mid-March in order to start laying eggs by early April.

Barn owls can live for up to ten years, but their lifespan can be as short as five. This often depends on food availability, especially if the vole population they rely on crashes for some reason. As winter is still with us, the female in particular should be feeding up in preparation for breeding, which may have led her to hunt elsewhere. Although voles are the mainstay of their diet, animals must be adaptable and will search further afield if a food source dries up. Barn owls also prey on other rodents, small birds, insects, and frogs, which are themselves breeding at this time of year and relatively easy to catch.

So please keep watching, and let's all hope for their speedy return to the nest box. πŸ™ πŸ‘‰

🐣 We have some 'cracking' news about the barn owls! 🐣

The first barn owl egg of 2024 has hatched! πŸŽ‰ The chick, which hatched last night (23 April) is being well cared for by the female. The male is supplying food as we can see by the vole offerings in the box, and hopefully this bodes well for a good food supply this year!

We can probably expect to see more eggs hatch in the next few days, so keep watching the live feed for the next arrival. πŸ‘€ πŸ₯š

Have you seen? πŸ‘€

The female barn owl is now sitting on four eggs! πŸ₯š πŸ™Œ We could see more eggs laid over the next few days, but the average clutch size of barn owls is four.

Mum is now busy incubating her eggs, so will be doing little hunting moving forward. Food should now be provided by the male.

If all goes well, we can expect the first egg to hatch by late April! Watch the barn owl parents and their eggs here. πŸ‘‰ https://bit.ly/3PMUws3 ~ Jack

Keen barn owl we**am watchers spotted the first new addition to the nest box arrived over the weekend, with a second egg being laid on Monday night. Since then, the female barn owl has been busy incubating the eggs with her warmth, so we were lucky to capture this glimpse of the two small eggs to share with you all.
