The Cancer Club is all about bringing men with cancer together and to get men talking! https://thecancerclub.co.uk/

The Cancer Club is a charity founded in 2020 by me, Matthew Wiltshire. When I was diagnosed with bowel cancer back in 2015, my world turned upside down. Suddenly there was a whole new universe to make sense of and navigate. There was the fear of treatment, the fear of my prognosis, and the overwhelming fear that I wouldn’t be around to look after my family as long as I’d planned. One thing was certain, I felt lonely and isolated. However sympathetic and understanding my friends and family tried to be, there was a gulf between their experience of this situation and mine. It is my hope that the work of The Cancer Club will help people in a similar position to me achieve a greater sense of wellbeing, as well as creating a cause for good that will continue long after I’m gone.

The Cancer Club brings men living with cancer together both online and in person.

There’s an online community where members can chat, ask questions, share experiences and enjoy the usual banter.

There are meet-ups.

There are sporting events and experiences.

And, most importantly, there are other men who understand that cancer can be part of your life without having to become the only thing anybody talks to you about.

Sometimes the best conversations happen when you’re walking side-by-side. 🚶‍♂️🚶‍♂️

Our Walk & Talk meet-up in Southampton brought members together for some fresh air, good company and the opportunity to catch up.

No formal meeting.
No sitting in a circle waiting for your turn to speak.
Just a group of blokes going for a walk.

Conversation might be about cancer. It might be about treatment. It might be football, family, work or what everyone is having for tea.

That’s rather the point.

The Cancer Club isn’t just somewhere to talk about cancer.
It’s somewhere you don’t have to explain why sometimes you need to.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month 🎀

And while breast cancer is overwhelmingly associated with women, there’s something we need more men to know:

Men can get breast cancer too.

It’s rare, which can make it very easy to assume that a change in the chest or breast area is “probably nothing”.

But men have breast tissue too.
A lump or swelling in the chest or armpit, changes to the ni**le, discharge or changes to the skin are all things that shouldn’t simply be ignored.

If you notice a change that isn’t normal for you, get it checked by your GP.

And if you’re a man who has been diagnosed with breast cancer, you absolutely belong in the cancer conversation.

The Cancer Club is here for men living with all types of cancer.
No embarrassment. No judgement.
Just men supporting men and getting men talking.

Tomorrow is World Mental Health Day.

So here’s something we think is worth saying.

A cancer diagnosis doesn’t only affect your body.

There’s the waiting. The appointments. The scans. The uncertainty. The worry about your family. The 3am thoughts you’d really rather your brain kept to itself.

And sometimes there’s the feeling that you’re supposed to be the one keeping it all together.
You don’t have to do that here.

The Cancer Club exists to get men talking — whether that’s a serious conversation about what’s happening, asking somebody who’s been there before, or talking complete rubbish for half an hour because you’ve had quite enough cancer for one day.

Sometimes talking helps.
And sometimes listening does too.

Now THAT’S how you wear the jersey. 💙🚴

A huge shout-out to Tony and Kevin, proudly flying the flag for The Cancer Club in their club jerseys at the Tour de 4 in Glasgow.

There’s something rather special about seeing our colours out there.

Because that jersey represents much more than a cycling club.

It represents men supporting men.

Friendships made through circumstances nobody would have chosen.
Conversations that matter.
Plenty of laughs.
And a reminder that life with cancer is still very much there to be lived.

“I don’t really know what to say.”

You’d be surprised how often that can be the hardest part.

Joining a group of strangers and talking about cancer probably isn’t high on anybody’s bucket list.

Which is why, at The Cancer Club, there’s no pressure to arrive with a big introduction or tell everyone your life story.

You can say hello.
You can ask a question.
You can join in with the banter.
You can read what other people have to say.

Or you can simply know that there are other blokes out there who understand a bit of what you’re going through.

The talking can come later.

🚶🚴 Virtual ’92 Challenge — They’re Off!

And they’re off! 🙌

Loads of you have signed up for our Virtual ’92 Challenge and the miles are already starting to clock up.

Teams Common Ground and Band of Brothers are both taking part, and their members are finding all sorts of ways to get those miles in.

🪂 Jeremy even went paragliding! Now, before anyone gets any ideas, flying through the air DOESN’T count towards your total… 😂 But he made sure he ran and walked before and after his glide to add to his daily miles.

🚴 Mark Chapman got on his bike and cycled all the way to Blackpool.

🚴 And Richard has been regularly getting out on his bike and adding those miles to the total.

This is exactly what the Virtual ’92 is all about. Moving when you can, doing it your way, having a bit of fun and being part of something together.

Keep going, lads — we’re loving seeing those totals climb! 👏

Thinking about joining The Cancer Club but wondering what happens next?

First things first: you don't need to arrive knowing anyone.
That's rather the point.

The Cancer Club was created because our founder, Matthew Wiltshire, struggled to find other men in the same boat after his own cancer diagnosis. He wanted to bring men together so experiences could be shared and some much-needed light relief could be found.

That mission continues today.

Our community connects men from around the UK, including through our WhatsApp groups, while sporting events and meet-ups give members opportunities to get together in person too.

No pressure to have all the answers.
No requirement to be "inspirational".

Just turn up as yourself.
