Meet Arthur. ❤️
Look into his eyes for a moment.
For centuries, pigeons have stood alongside humanity. Their loyalty, intelligence and extraordinary ability to find their way home made them invaluable companions and messengers.
During two World Wars, they flew through gunfire, smoke and explosions, carrying life-saving messages across battlefields when all other communication had failed. They helped save countless lives, often risking their own in the process.
They trusted us. They worked alongside us. They served us with a devotion that we should never forget.
And yet, Arthur’s story is a heartbreaking reminder of how we repay that loyalty.
Arthur was once a racing pigeon. He gave his service to humans, just as generations of pigeons before him had done. But when he was no longer considered useful, he was cruelly discarded.
A bird whose ancestors had helped save human lives was now considered disposable.
Today, pigeons are labelled pests, vermin and nuisances. Their history, their loyalty and their contribution to humanity are all too easily forgotten.
But Arthur is not vermin. He is not disposable. He is a living, feeling creature who deserves kindness and respect.
They trusted us with their lives. They carried our messages through war. They helped bring our loved ones home.
Surely we owe them more than contempt.
So this Remembrance Day, remember the soldiers, remember the fallen, but spare a thought for the feathered heroes, too.
And the next time you see a pigeon on a pavement, remember Arthur.
They were loyal to us. It’s time we were a little more loyal to them.
