Covid-19 has considerably curtailed our normal activities but with the excellent assistance of 'zoom', the strong communications have flourished! Even fundraising for good causes has continued as best possible with new innovative approaches in place of the cancelled annual events. In normal years, the Club raises in the region of £20,000 for good causes. Rotarian members are unpaid volunteers, working hard to support charities and local communities.

A great evening was enjoyed at our Club Assembly this week, as President Elect Vincent Bowen shared his vision, goals and exciting plans for the year ahead.

It was inspiring to hear about the projects, community initiatives and opportunities that lie ahead for our club, and there is certainly plenty to look forward to.

We were also delighted to welcome Assistant District Governor Jack Balchin, who joined us to hear about our plans and offer his support. Thank you, Jack, for taking the time to be with us.

With such enthusiasm, commitment and ambition on display, the future looks bright for Bideford Bridge Rotary Club as we prepare for another year of service above self.

Not only was it a great result for England last night, but it was also a fantastic result for our club as we celebrated three new signings!

What a memorable evening as we welcomed Richard Hooper, Robin Buckland and Jim Lowe into our Rotary family.

It was a privilege to induct them and celebrate their commitment to service, friendship and making a difference in our local community. Their enthusiasm, skills and experience will be a tremendous asset to the club, and we look forward to seeing the contribution they will make in the years ahead.

A huge thank you to their sponsors and to everyone who helped make them feel so welcome. Nights like these remind us just how strong and vibrant our club is.

This edition celebrates a very special milestone as we prepare to mark the 40th anniversary of our Rotary Club charter on 7th July. Over the past few months we’ve enjoyed inspiring speakers, supported local schools through our literacy projects, visited Children’s Hospice South West, funded community initiatives both locally and internationally, and continued our commitment to making a difference across North Devon and beyond.

A huge thank you to all our members, supporters, partners and friends who help make our work possible.

We hope you enjoy reading about the activities, fellowship and service that continue to make Rotary such a positive force in our community.

🌍🤝 As part of our Scatter Week, John Bishop and I had the pleasure of visiting Bude Rotary Club, where we received a very warm welcome from members.

📚 We enjoyed an inspiring presentation from one of their members about the voluntary work they undertake in some of the poorest areas of Africa. Their projects focus on supporting children’s education and helping to create opportunities that can transform lives and communities.

💙 It was both humbling and uplifting to hear first-hand about the difference Rotary members are making through their commitment, dedication and service. Thank you to Bude Rotary Club for their hospitality and for sharing such an encouraging story of Rotary in action.

✨ Friendship, fellowship and Service Above Self continue to be at the heart of Rotary wherever we go.

🎪🎶 A huge thank you to Brian Butler for a fascinating and enlightening talk on the incredible behind-the-scenes world of the Glastonbury Festival 🌍♻️

It was amazing to hear just what it takes to create what is effectively a temporary city in Somerset each year — and the sheer scale of the operation is hard to imagine until you hear the facts!

Some of the astonishing figures shared included:
🎟️ Around 210,000 people attend — giving the festival a population larger than Bath
⛺ Tens of thousands of tents appear across the site during the week
🙋‍♂️ Thousands of volunteers and staff help keep everything running smoothly
🚛 Huge infrastructure is needed including power, water, transport and waste management
💷 Millions of pounds are raised for charities including Oxfam, Greenpeace and WaterAid

Brian also spoke about his own role in helping with the enormous recycling and waste operation that takes place after the festival ♻️🚮 — a truly mammoth task and one that plays a vital part in reducing the environmental impact of such a huge event. We were even encouraged to “spot the t-shirt!” 😄

A thoroughly enjoyable evening, full of amazing stories, little-known facts and plenty of humour. Thank you Brian for giving us such a brilliant insight into one of the world’s most iconic festival
