The Westerham Clangers We are the bellringers at St Mary the Virgin Church in Westerham, Kent. Visitors and learners always welcome! 🤗 You can also simply come and watch what we do :)

‘The Westerham Clangers’ are the bell-ringers at St Mary’s Church in Westerham. We are a friendly and informal group of volunteers; visiting ringers and beginners are always welcome! Please feel free to join us at one of our practices on Tuesday evenings from 7:45PM.

Who else can relate...? 'There's something pretty magical about that moment when everyone is working together, the ringing settles into its rhythm and the bells just... flow.'

Practising 'Whole Pull Plain Hunt' on six bells under a beautifully clear, starlit sky ✨

We hope to ring this method for the Remembrance Day service at St Mary's church next month.

Below is the striking pattern we memorise and follow, with each sequence repeated to account for a ‘whole pull’: handstroke (hands on the woollen sally) + backstroke (pulling the tail of the rope):-

We're ringing for Choral Evensong in Westerham this Sunday, 4th October.

You’ll hear the bells at 5.30pm, followed by the church choir from 6pm for this 'quiet, reflective service to end the weekend'.

And we need to give another shoutout to St Mary's (busy!) chorister Oliver Davis because later this month, on Saturday 24th October, he's performing a wonderful recital, accompanied by church organist (this time on piano), Dan Eaton.

‘Where the Road Leads’ will take you on a journey through three centuries of English song, ‘exploring love, loss, nature, memory and the enduring spirit of the traveller.’

We are very fortunate in Westerham to be among such talented musicians!

Look at that smile! ☺️ Tower Captain Elaine exudes pure happiness when she rejoins our band.

It might all fall apart later on(!), but ringing those first few rounds back in our Westerham tower always seems to bring her such joy ❤️

Watch to the end to find out what else our captain has to be happy about... Pure coincidence, or best behaviour?! 😉

We usually ring our front four (lightest) bells up in rounds. To non-ringers, this probably sounds like we're racing until we run out of steam!

🐇 What's actually happening is we're getting the bells swinging; and to begin with they're making small movements, in quick succession.

🐢 As the bells gain momentum to reach almost-full rotation, each 'swing' takes longer, so the whole round slows down.

When the conductor calls "Stand", all four bells are halted upright, resting against their stays – and will remain like this until we are ready to begin ringing.

Christina put us all to shame at the last Choral Evensong ring by being the only Westerham Clanger to remember to wear their red KCACR - Kent County Association of Change Ringers shirt 😬

We'll all try to do better for the next one at St Mary's Church, on Sunday 4th October 🎶

Oh and that's not a bell ringing injury: Nick just got a bit too enthusiastic with his hedge trimmer at the weekend – but he's mending nicely! 😅

We’re lucky to ring amid beautiful floral displays regularly created by St Mary’s Flower Guild, and on Saturday 19th September you can meet the experts and choose something for your own home or garden.

Pop in for the coffee morning and plant sale at the church, where you’ll find herbs, perennials and more supplied by members of the Flower Guild – alongside a tempting array of cakes!
