The Cycle

The Cycle A child dies from a sanitation-related illness every 17 seconds. We're working hard to change that.

We take for granted the fact that we can use a toilet whenever we want, but for some 2.3 billion people that option is not available and the impact this has on their lives is catastrophic.

1.4 million children die every year from diarrhoea caused by unclean water and poor sanitation – according to the World Health Organisation it kills more children than AIDS, malaria and measles combined. Worki

ng in close collaboration with communities and organisations on the ground, we develop and implement innovative, sustainable sanitation solutions. We champion the use of GroSan (composting) toilets, which are clean and hygienic and last for decades. These toilets protect water sources and the local environment from pollution and produce rich, valuable compost. The improvement in the quality of their day to day lives is real and positive – reducing ill health and disease and enabling them to work, develop livelihoods or attend school, giving them the tools they need to lift themselves out of poverty. Sanitation First receives no government funding and we are wholly dependent upon voluntary donations from individual donors, trust & foundations and corporates, to fund our vital work. We keep our administration costs to a minimum with 80% of income going directly to projects.

Menstrual Health Day 2026 ❤️

This Menstrual Health Day, we’re reflecting on an important conversation we held last year, when and The Cycle brought together MPs, researchers, disability and trans rights advocates, and community practitioners in Chennai for the symposium:

“Beyond the Basics: Menstrual Health as Dignity, Inclusion & Policy Priority.”

The discussions reminded us that menstrual health is not just about access to products, it is about dignity, equity, inclusion, and the right to participate fully in society.

Today, we are sharing some of the most powerful insights, reflections, and calls to action that emerged from that room.

Massive thank you as well to Savills IM for making it possible through their support with charity places.

More on our partnerships coming up…

This Earth Day, double your impact 💚

From 22nd to 29th April, every donation is matched through The Big Give’s Earth Raise Match Fund.

In drought-hit Mullikudi, families are spending up to a third of their daily wages on water, women are walking up to 5 hours a day to fetch water or relying on unsafe sources. We are raising £30,000 to restore a traditional drinking water pond and bring safe water back to 136 households.

Alongside we will restore the pond, improve groundwater, and support long-term community resilience.

We have just one week to unlock £30,000 for this vital project. Every donation made will be matched £ for £!

So excited to share that construction has officially begun on the infrastructure for our Sustainable Livelihoods project for Sri Lankan Tamils in Tuticorin.

Our CEO Georgina had the amazing privilege of witnessing the Bhoomi Puja, the traditional ground blessing we do before starting any project. A meaningful moment marking an important beginning.

This project is made possible thanks to the generous support of Big Give donors and the collaboration of the district administration, NRT Debt, and UNHCR.

We’re so excited to be the charity partner of as they launch their collaboration with . At the heart of it is food that brings people together.

Tamila’s head chef, Prince, has created a bold Chettinad Lamb Pinsa for Bar Jackie, and for every pinsa sold, £1 supports our work.

Rooted in shared values: community, culture, and creating possibility.

Try it at Bar Jackie, paired with a Desi Spritz or Tamil Negroni 🍸

Georgie and Lily joined the launch evening last week, full of warmth, incredible food, and the kind of people who make partnerships like this feel personal and real.

This is just the beginning.
Thank you TAMILA and Broadwick Soho 🌶️

Happy Pongal! 🌾☀️

Pongal is a harvest festival rooted in gratitude, renewal, and the deep connection between people, land, water, and the sun. Celebrated over four days, it’s a time to pause, give thanks, and honour the natural cycles that sustain life.

Named after the act of letting a pot of freshly harvested rice, milk, and jaggery boil over, Pongal symbolises abundance and the hope for a generous year ahead. Celebrated each January as the sun begins its northward journey, it also signals the start of a new agricultural cycle across Tamil Nadu.

At The Cycle, this connection between land, water, and nourishment sits at the heart of our work. Our projects are designed in partnership with nature, supporting both communities and the ecosystems they depend on.

May this Pongal bring abundance, balance, and shared hope for the season ahead ✨

⭐️ Donate Now to Double Your Impact! ⭐️

The Cycle’s Big Give Christmas Challenge is LIVE! From 2–9 Dec, every donation through our campaign page is matched £ for £.

We’re restoring a vital waterbody in Tiruvallur, Tamil Nadu, bringing back 12 million litres of water and supporting long-term water security for thousands.

But what does “restoring a waterbody” really mean?
It means taking a dried, polluted, unsafe space (see slide 2)…
…and transforming it into a thriving source of clean water and community pride (see slide 3).

The impact:
Safe drinking water for many
Groundwater restored and communities protected from floods
Families free from waterborne diseases
A waterbody that inspires learning and community pride
Women reclaim their time, energy, and dignity

Our goal: £20,000 — all doubled.

Every pound becomes two, making every act of kindness twice as powerful. 💧✨

This International Day of the Girl (11th October), you can double your donation, doubling your difference.

From 8th – 15th October, every donation you make will be matched through The Big Give’s Women and Girls Match Fund, doubling your impact.

In India alone, 150 million women and girls lack the basic resources they need to manage their periods safely. Every year, 23 million girls drop out of school because of inadequate menstrual hygiene management (DASRA).

With your help, our award winning Happy Periods Programme is changing this by providing menstrual health education and sustainable period products so that no one is held back by their period.

Link to donate is in our bio.❤️
